[01] Denktash says efforts for direct talks continuing

Replying to reporters' questions, Denktash assessed statements made by the Cyprus government to the effect that it is on the verge of making significant decisions. Claiming that faced with the world treatment of the Cyprus government as the legitimate government the only Turkish Cypriot alternative is ``to raise its national spirit and put up a resistance'', Denktash added: ``Let no one expect me to sit at the negotiating table with those who claim that the TRNC does not exist. This is not included in the authority granted to me by my people''. He said he hoped that the significant decisions the Cyprus government is referring to are its acceptance of the sovereignty, equality of the Turkish Cypriots and the principle of bizonality. Denktash added that if, in addition, the Cyprus government accepts the principles in the Set of Ideas then it will be possible to hold direct talks.

Stressing that the Turkish Cypriots are insistent on preserving the rights granted and balance established through the 1960 agreements, Denktash repeated that Turkey's guarantees cannot be altered. He described the proposal for a multinational force as the death of (words indistinct).

[02] Eroglu says no concrete development regarding direct talks

Rauf Denktash held his weekly routine meeting with Eroglu and Serdar Denktash, ``state minister and deputy prime minister''. Eroglu and Serdar Denktash briefed Denktash on the ``government's'' activities. The major item on the agenda, however, was foreign policy.

In a statement to the press after the meeting that lasted about half an hour, Eroglu said that the indirect talks are advancing towards the direct ones, adding that they discussed the strategy the ``government'' should be pursuing. Pointing out that there has yet not been a concrete development regarding the direct talks to be held between the two leaders, Eroglu said that there are issues that have been raised by President Clerides and over which the Turkish Cypriot side can make no concessions whatsoever. He noted that at this point it is not clear whether the direct talks will begin. Pointing out that whether a positive result can be achieved will be determined in the process of the talks, Eroglu claimed that if the Greek Cypriots do not renounce their current stand it is evident that it will be impossible to attain a positive result.

Eroglu alleged that so long as the world continues to recognize the Greek Cypriots as the legitimate state and so long as messages are conveyed that the EU will begin the partnership negotiations following the intergovernmental talks the Greek Cypriots will continue their ``intransigence''.

[03] Denktash on the Rouvas - Kut concert

He said that he did not receive an invitation from the UN to this effect.

As for the concert and the football match between youth teams, Denktash said: ``The responsibility is completely upon the UN and on those who will go. Neither the government nor myself accept any responsibility. Whether the time is appropriate or not ... They are doing it. They considered it appropriate, and in order not to accuse us of ´not wanting such beautiful events´ we told them that it is their responsibility. Let them decide who will attend as well.'' (MY)

[04] TWO SO-CALLED DEPUTIES FROM DEMOCRATIC PARTY RESIGN

With the resignations the number of so-called deputies at the so-called Assembly is as follows:

National Unity Party NUP 16 Democratic Party DP 14 Republican Turkish Party RTP 13 Communal Liberation Party CLP 5 Independents 2 Total 50

In his letter of resignation Besesler said that holding early elections in 1997 is the only way out from the political and economic instability that is going on in the occupied area.

HALKIN SESI reports that both Turkoz and Besesler were founding members of the party. They will continue as independent ``deputies''. (MY)

[05] ANATOLIAN AGENCY TO TRAIN ``TAK'' CORRESPONDENTS

YENIDUZEN reports that while exchange of news, free of charge, continues between the two agencies, the AA continues to train ``TAK'' correspondents as well.

It reports that three illegal TAK correspondents left for Ankara to receive training at the AA headquarters. (MY)

[06] FLORA INVENTORY FOR ``NATIONAL PARK'' IN OCCUPIED KARPASS PENINSULA

The so-called director of environment Yusuf Bulak has said that the area between east of Rizokarpasso village and Cape Andreas has been covered.

He said that endemic species have been registered and the areas where they can be found will be declared protected areas.

Bulak said that Dr Derek Viney has assisted in the inventory work that started on May the 5th. Dr Viney, who lives in the occupied area and has had two books published on vegetation, offered his asisstance free of charge, as a volunteer.
