[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Erbakan vows to implement economic protocol with CyprusAccording to TRT (18:00 hours, 23.1.97) in a statement prior to a Council of Ministers meeting in Ankara yesterday, Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan said that Rauf Denktash telephoned him and expressed his satisfaction over his recent visit to Turkey. Pointing out that there is an economic cooperation agreement between Turkey and the "TRNC", Erbakan vowed that this will be closely followed and fully implemented.Making a statement at the end of the Council of Ministers meeting, Namik Kemal Zeybek, state minister and government spokesman, said that the Cyprus question was also discussed during the meeting. According to Zeybek, Tansu Ciller, foreign minister and deputy prime minister, declared that this is a national issue for Turkey and that any attack against the "TRNC" will be considered as directed against Turkey and will be retaliated immediately. [02] Turkish Cypriot delegation meets Turkish Assembly speakerAccording to TRT (18:00 hours, 22.1.97) Hakki Atun, so-called speaker of the pseudo-Assembly went to Ankara for contacts. The delegation accompanying Atun includes so-called parliamentarians from the "TRNC Council of Europe (COE) Parliamentary Assembly group".Atun and the delegation met with Mustafa Kalemli, speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA). Kalemli said that the messages given out by the Turkish side must be understood well. He said that the TGNA delegation and the so-called Turkish Cypriot Assembly delegation attend various international meetings together and added that during this visit, preliminary preparations will be made in anticipation of the COE Parliamentary Assembly meeting to be held in Strasbourg next week. [03] Campaign to promote the pseudostateAccording to SABAH (23.1.97), Turkish embassies have been instructed to do more about promoting the pseudostate. In view of developments on the island, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has called for more support for the "TRNC", as a way of generating more foreign interest in finding a lasting solution to the island's problems.The decision to promote the pseudostate as a way of bringing the problems of the island to international attention comes in the wake of an visit to Ankara by Rauf Denktash, who has since returned to the occupied area "well pleased" with his visit. [04] Assistants to US Congressmen visit the occupied areaAccording to KIBRIS (24.1.97) three assistants to US Congressmen have arrived in the occupied area as the guest of so-called Turkish Cypriot History Association chairman Vehbi Zeki Serter.The group, made up of Chris Peace, Dale Neugebauer and Lydia Barland, had a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
