[01] Turkey opposes Greek Cypriot participation at BSEC summit

According to Anatolia agency (14:25 hours, 23.10.96) Turkey on Wednesday said it would continue its opposition against Greek Cypriot demand to participate in the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) summit in observer status.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel told a weekly news briefing that Turkey evaluated the initiative "as a part of Greek Cypriot efforts, with a provocation of Greece, to take place in various institutions and to make itself accepted."

Akbel claimed the Cyprus Government was not qualified enough "legally and morally" to represent the Cyprus Republic, set up with international agreements, which was recognized by the international community.

"Basically, this is the core of the Cyprus issue" Akbel claimed.

Speaking to the visiting Lions, Denktash alleged that the Greek Cypriots, instead of taking friendship steps, are taking animosity steps.
