[01] Denktash meets Albright, wants talks based on Set of Ideas

According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 18.7.96) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has reiterated his call for a meeting with President Clerides. Denktash said: "The talks, the dialogue between the sides, can start as soon as Clerides announces that he accepts the set of ideas as a basis."

Yesterday, Denktash met with Madeleine Albright, US permanent representative to the United Nations, who was on a one-day visit to Cyprus, and the delegation accompanying her. The meeting continued through lunch as well. After the meeting, Albright merely said that it was a beneficial meeting.

In his statement after the meeting, Denktash declared that the United States did not submit a new proposal or plan. Denktash noted that during the meeting he outlined to the US delegation the primary issues that are important for the Turkish Cypriots.

He said: "We clearly said that there is a basis and an agenda for the resumption of the talks. The set of ideas provides a wide scope for an agenda. There is no reason for the Greek Cypriot side to shun the negotiating table."

Referring to the deconfrontation issue, Denktash pointed out that the situation of the soldiers facing each other was raised as an important problem. Alleging the Turkish Cypriot side has always been ready to do something in this regard, Denktash stated: "There are moves that must be undertaken by the United Nations if we are to achieve this. Let us discuss this with the United Nations."

Denktash also reiterated that the Cyprus problem can be resolved by the two sides, adding that others can also contribute to the solution of the problem but that the matter can be solved between the two sides within the framework of the goodwill mission of the UN secretary general. Denktash announced that there will be good news regarding the deconfrontation issue within four or five days, but refrained from giving details. He said: "Wait and see. It will be good for both sides."

[02] Erbakan and Turkish MPs in the occupied area of the 20 July anniversary

KIBRIS (19.7.96) reports that Turkey's Islamist Prime Minister, Necmettin Erbakan, will be arriving in the occupied area tomorrow for the 20 July invasion and occupation anniversary "celebrations", as Denktash's guest.

KIBRIS says that Erbakan will return to Turkey on the same day.

The State Minister Responsible for Cyprus Affairs Abdullah Gul and other ministers will be accompanying Erbakan.

Illegal Bayrak radio (8:00 hours 19.7.96) news did not refer to Erbakan's visit.

Furthermore, KIBRIS (19.7.96) reports that a high-level Turkish parliamentary delegation headed by the deputy speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Kamer Genc, will also be arriving in the occupied area to take part in the 20 July invasion anniversary "celebrations".

The delegation will leave the occupied area on 22 July.

The "celebrations" will start with Denktash's speech from illegal Bayrak radio. (MY) EF/SK
