[01] Turkey to `urge' Russia to adopt `Fair Approach' on Cyprus

MILLIYET (9.7.96), reports that Ankara has moved to urge Moscow to adopt a fair approach on the Cyprus problem. It will be recalled that Russia's approach on the problem has made the Turkish officials uneasy.

It has been ascertained that a Foreign Ministry delegation arrived in Moscow yesterday to hold talks on the Cyprus problem. Diplomatic sources have said that Ankara is convinced that Moscow has recently adopted a pro-Greek Cypriot policy on the Cyprus problem and that Russia's approach has made the Turkish officials uneasy.

Considering Russia's special relations with the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish officials are convinced that Moscow is trying to use the Cyprus problem against Ankara because of the clashing interests between Russia and Turkey.

A large number of Russian tourists visit Cyprus every year. However, what has made Ankara uneasy is the military and trade relations between Russia and Cyprus. Turkey has been worried by the sale of Russian arms and military equipment to Cypriot. Meanwhile, Ankara also has been worried by Russia's effort to place the Cyprus problem on the UN Security Council's agenda. Moscow wants to use the UN Security Council to play a role on the Cyprus problem. That is why it has urged the council to adopt a more active approach. It has also been reported that Ankara has been worried by the pro-Greek Cypriot statements made by Russia's special representative on the Cyprus problem.

Reports indicate that the Turkish delegation will inform the Russian officials about Turkey's uneasiness and try to persuade Moscow to adopt a fair approach.

[02] Atun to Istanbul

KIBRIS (12.7.96) reports that the so-called Prime Minister of the pseudostate, Hakki Atun will be leaving the occupied area for Istanbul today to attend the "Anniversary" celebrations of the invasion and occupation of Cyprus by Turkish Army.

The "anniversary" activities are organized by the Beyoglu Municipality of the Metropolitan Istanbul.

Atun also will take part at a panel discussion; "Objectives of the Cyprus Peace Operation and the solution of the Cyprus problem" organized by the said municipality. (MY)

[03] A new hospital wing in the occupied Kyrenia

According to KIBRIS (12.7.96) a new 50 bad annex to the hospital in the occupied Kyrenia has been inaugurated yesterday.

During the inauguration ceremony, the US citizen Mrs. Jane Greisse submitted necessary documents for a donation of an Ambulance, and other equipment worth 65 thousand US dollars, to the hosptial.

KIBRIS reports that Mrs. Greisse is working to secure a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine for the hospital for diagnostic Medicine.

The Kyrenia Rotary Club as well donated a fully equipped Ambulance worth 30 thousand US dollars to the hospital. (MY)

[04] New US Ambassador meets Denktash

According to KIBRIS (12.7.96) the new US Ambassador to Cyprus Kenneth Brill paid a courtesy call to Denktash yesterday.

There was no statement after the meeting, but KIBRIS reports that Cyprus problem was the main subject for discussion. (MY)

[05] Norway is the main export market for the potatoes produced in

the occupied area

KIBRIS (12.7.96) reports that the occupied area which suffered a loss of 136 billion TL last year from potato export, this year, was able to make profit 16 billion TL.

The total sales this year amounted to 134 billion TL of which 118 billion TL will be paid to the producer the remaining 16 billion TL will be the profit of the so-called "Soil Produce Council" the exporter of potatoes produced in the occupied area.

The main export market for the potatoes produced in the occupied area this year was Norway. (MY)
