    [02] Tassos Turkey

President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos said that there is no doubt Turkey is using delaying tactics and might pursue the non-implementation of the protocol to its customs union agreement with the European Union, extending the accord to all ten new members, including Cyprus.

Speaking on his return from Brussels where he participated in the European Council, President Papadopoulos said however that there are many measures that can be taken to force Turkey to comply and to fulfill its obligations towards the EU and Cyprus.

    [03] Anastasiades Erdogan

President of DISI Nicos Anastasiades has confirmed reports in Turkish daily ''Radikal'' that his party had invited the Turkish Justice and Development Party to visit Cyprus, noting that there seems to be a positive response and it is a matter of time.

In statements at Larnaca Airport last night on return from Brussels, where he participated in the European People's Party summit, and asked if the party's delegation would come to Cyprus through legitimate points of entry, Anastasiades said this was a ''fundamental precondition.'' A DISY delegation headed by Anastasiades visited recently Turkey at Turkish Justice and Development party's invitation.

    [04] Moratinos Cyprus

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel Angel Moratinos who arrived in Cyprus last night met with President Papadopoulos this morning.

Mr. Moratinos also met with House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias.

No statements were made after the meetings.

Spanish Foreign Minister also met with his Cypriot counterpart George Iacovou.

    [05] London ads

Adverts in Britain for holidays in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus that were due to appear on London buses and the Tube have been withdrawn after protests from Chairman of the London Assembly Conservatives Brian Coleman, who is also the Assembly member for Barnet and Camden.

According to a press release issued by the Assembly, the holidays promoted in the ads would have used hotels and homes confiscated by Turks during the invasion of the island in 1974, noting that the adverts, paid for by the tourist board in occupied Cyprus, deeply offended many members of the Greek Cypriot community.

The press release adds that North Cyprus remains an international pariah, recognised only by Turkey.

    [06] Kyrgistan chaos

Protesters forced their way into Kyrgyzstan's main government building today, with one waving a national flag from the second floor of the building and another throwing papers from an upper-storey window.

According to Reuters correspondent protesters demanding the resignation of President Askar Akayev had entered the White House after police guarding the building withdrew.

The situation outside the building was tense, with the large crowd of protesters fearful of serious bloodshed.

The Thousands of Kyrgyz opposition protesters demand the resignation of veteran President Askar Akayev.

The correspondent had earlier heard several gunshots in the capital Bishkek where fighting broke out between supporters of Akayev and thousands of opposition protesters.

Shouting "Down with the Akayev clans", some 10,000 people marched through Bishkek and there were fears that the situation in the Central Asian state could spin out of control.

The gunshots were heard for a brief period but it was not clear who had fired them or if anyone had been hit.

There were unconfirmed reports that one man had been killed in the fighting as the two sides battled with rocks and sticks, with people running in all directions in the chaos.

Some analysts have warned that the increasingly bitter divide could push the impoverished ex-Soviet state into civil war.

The country of 5 million borders China and lies in an energy-rich region where Washington and Moscow vie for influence. Both powers have military bases outside the capital.

    [07] Bangladesh storm

Tropical storms sweeping across Bangladesh have killed at least 80 people over the past four days.

Most victims died under collapsed houses and uprooted trees in southern and western districts. Others died in lightning strikes, hail storms or sinking boats.

"Storms continue to hit many places and we are getting reports of casualties and property damage every day," a disaster management official in Dhaka said.

Around 1,000 people were injured and more than 15,000 people were left homeless by the storms, the first of the annual storm season, the officials said.

Tropical outbursts kill hundreds of people in Bangladesh each summer and meteorology officials said frequent storms were likely through the summer season to the end of May.

    [08] Mideast

An Israeli Arab has been charged with murder for driving a Palestinian suicide bomber to a nightclub for an attack that killed five Israelis and broke a new ceasefire.

The Feb. 25 bombing in Tel Aviv stalled momentum towards peacemaking after an Israeli-Palestinian summit but the truce has largely held since then and Israel has begun pulling back forces from occupied areas of the West Bank.

The Tel Aviv District Court indictment said Ashraf Kaisi, 26, helped Islamic Jihad militants from the West Bank select a site for the attack and bought a large quantity of insecticide for them to make explosives.

Kaisi was further accused of driving the bomber to the vicinity of a Tel Aviv nightclub where he blew himself up among a queue of partygoers outside.

Kaisi, from the Israeli Arab town of Baka al-Gharbiya on Israel's boundary with the West Bank, was charged with murder and faces a maximum life sentence in Israel.

Kaisi was detained a day after the bombing.

The charges were published after authorities lifted a gag order on his arrest.

    [09] Iraq

Iraqi militants have kidnapped an Iraqi man who holds German citizenship and demanded in a videotape that Germany frees Muslim prisoners according to Al Jazeera television.

But a German government source in Berlin questioned the report.

The footage aired by Al Jazeera did show not the man or the militants, from the hitherto unknown group, speaking. Close-ups of the man's documents were shown, but were not clear.

"The group calling itself 'Protectors of Islam Brigades' is holding Abdul Hussein Alzaidi, who in the video called on the German government, Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and German media to quickly intervene for his release," Al Jazeera said, showing a video of Alzaidi and two masked militants behind him.

A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman in Berlin said that the German embassy in Baghdad was involved in the case.

    [10] Weather

This afternoon the weather will be mainly clear with passing cloud which will increase in some areas.
