[01] HEADLINES

--A bomb explosion killed at least six Italian policemen today at their headquarters in the southern Iraqi town of Nassiriya.

Witnesses said it was an apparent suicide car-bomb attack.

--Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie said today his new government was committed to halting all violence against Israel.

And,

-- Philippine police used teargas and water cannon to disperse thousands of supporters of ousted president Joseph Estrada today after they gathered in Manila to demand President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo step down.

[02] DENKTASH

Speaking on TV in the turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, Mr. Denktash said both he and Ankara are working on the Annan plan. It is expected the work will come together so that a new formula will ensue opening a new window of opportunity on Cyprus, according to Mr. Denktash.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul talked about the plan, saying the aim is for a permanent, viable and realistic solution.

Mr. Denktash said the only way he would discuss the Annan Plan is to include provisions about "two peoples, two states, two sovereingties and Turkish guarantees".

[03] IRAQ ITALY

Witnesses said it was an apparent suicide car-bomb attack.

"A truck-bomb has exploded killing six military," said Alessandro Di Gruttola, spokesman for the Carabinieri military police command in Rome told Reuters. He also said there were other wounded.

About 2,300 Italian troops are in southern Iraq, many based in Nassiriya which had been relatively calm since the war. The Italians are part of a British-led multinational force in charge of security in the south of the country.

A spokesman for the British-led multinational force which controls southern Iraq said the explosion occurred at 0750 GMT. Witnesses said a car had driven into the entrance of the base and exploded.

A contingent of 128 Portuguese paramilitary officers were scheduled to leave for Nassiriya today.

[04] IRAQ GOVT

Jalal Talabani, who holds the rotating presidency of the 25-member council, told Reuters in an interview that it is very reasonable and necessary to have a provisional government before having a constitution.

Mr. Talabani, leader of a pro-U.S. Kurdish faction"This will be a big blow to the terrorist claims that we are under occupation and that the Americans are ruling the country .

He said that claims that the United States was looting Iraq had been exposed as false by an 18 billion dollar reconstruction aid package recently passed by the U.S. Congress.

[05] MIDEAST

Mr. Qurie told a session of parliament, summoned to ratify his new cabinet, that he was urging "our Palestinian people and all Palestinian forces and factions to stop all kinds of mutual violence" as part of the U.S.-backed "road map" peace plan which calls for militants to be reined in.

He also called on Israel and the Palestinians to end attacks on civilians and work together to reach a mutual ceasefire.

"I extend my hand to you with sincerity in order to begin serious and prompt action for a mutual ceasefire to halt the bloodshed and stop violence," Mr. Qurie said.

Furthermore, he called for a general election to be held by June 2004 as part of efforts to restore order in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and revive peacemaking with Israel.

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat extended an olive branch to Israel today as his parliament met to vote on a new cabinet considered crucial to reviving U.S.-backed peace moves.

Mr. Arafat, who has been shunned by Israel, reaffirmed the Jewish state's right to live in security alongside a future Palestinian state and called for an end to the spiral of Middle East fighting.

In his address, Mr. Arafat accused Israel of waging a "criminal war" against a three-year-old Palestinian uprising and of threatening his life.

[06] PHILIPPINES PROTEST

Television pictures showed protesters running away as riot police advanced towards them outside a shopping mall in the main business district, firing teargas and defending themselves with shields against objects thrown from the crowd.

National Security Adviser Roilo Golez said on television the protest was a civil disturbance matter and the government was not looking at it as a national security concern, dismissing rumours that the demonstration was part of a plot to destabilise the government.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Around 7,000 protesters had earlier marched through the financial district before camping outside the shopping mall in the same area where soldiers complaining of government corruption staged an abortive coup in July.

[07] CARS CABINET

Communications and Works Minister Kikis Kazamias told CyBc that the Cabinet will examine the proposal and decide whether to submit it to the House tomorrow.

Chairman of the House Finance Committee, Aristos Chrysostomou said he believed the government proposal will be submitted to the House tomorrow.

[08] POLICE BODIES

The dead are Stelia Pieri, 26, hairdresser, and her husband Mohamad Mosad, 36, from Egypt. The two were separated.

Andreas Naoum, in charge of Nicosia CID said according to preliminary reports, the Egyptian doused himself and Pieri with gas and then set fire to both.

Earlier, he had removed from the apartment Pieri's two children from her first marriage.

Police had no reports from Pieri that her estranged husband was threatening her however, preliminary investigations note that the Egyptian had planned to harm his wife. The two children were picked up by their father.

[09] THEFT NSIA

An unknown man stole a bag from a vehicle containing two thousand three hundred pounds while the driver got out of the car to remove two road cones. The money belonged to a bakery where the female driver was working at.

[10] WEATHER

Tonight it will be mainly clear but later cloud will develop over the west. Winds will be north-westerly to north-easterly light, two to three beaufort and the sea slight. Temperatures will fall to 7 C inland, ten on the coasts and two over the mountains with frost forming.
