    [02] Iacovou Islamic

Foreign minister Yiorgos Iacovou stated that there are positive indications regarding the positions of the government being pushed through at the Islamic Conference. In statements to our station this morning, Mr Iacovou said that the government has received assurances that Turkey will not be allowed to promote her negative stance on the Cyprus issue. The foreign minister said that the Conference has been covered, both on a political as well as a diplomatic level, by the contacts of President Papadopoulos and himself, both in New York and elsewhere. Yesterday, the president of the republic had revealed that 22 Islamic countries were approached by himself and the foreign minister and that Turkey has been working frantically behind the scenes in order to achieve a reference to the Cyprus issue that serves its positions and the pseudostate in the occupied territories.

    [03] Protopapas Cyprus

Greek government spokesman Christos Protopapas on an official visit to the island, stated that the solution of the Cyprus issue, remains everyone's common goal. He added, that Athens and Nicosia are going down the same road and will continue efforts towards thisd direction. In statements following a meeting with the leader of the opposition Democratic Rally Nikos Anastasiades, Mr Protopapas said that there was agreement on the Cyprus problem, the island's European course, but also certain issues concerning the European Union now, in light of the Summit on the Intergovernmental Conference. Mr Protopapas also said that on his return to Athens, he will tell Prime Minister Simitis about the encouraging picture from his contacts in Cyprus. Mr Anastasiades expressed satisfaction on the great interest of the Greek government about Cyprus and asked Mr Protopapas to give the Prime Minister his gratitude and thanks on his continuous support on the Cyprus issue.

    [04] Erdogan Cyprus

Turkish prime minister Tayip Erdogan ruled out the possibility of his government rejected the Anan plan, because it is seeking a solution of the Cyprus problem. Tayip Erdogan added that the London-Zurich agreements of 1960, must be taken into consideration and any solution must be in line with justice and the free will of the two communities. According to a report in the Turkish cypriot daily Africa, the Turkish prime minister also claimed that the Greek cypriot side is responsible for not finding a solution, because it did not reciprocate Rauf Denktash's so-called positive steps. The Turkish cypriot leader also expressed the view that the Cyprus issue should be solved on the basis of the 1960 agreements, in statements yesterday in the occupied territories, following his arrival from Constantinople.

    [05] Twins

Over to foreign news and Doctors in Dallas successfully separated two-year-old Egyptian twins joined at the crown of their heads, giving them a chance at independent lives after a smooth, two-day surgery involving 18 doctors.

Ahmed and Mohamed Ibrahim were separated at Children's Medical Center of Dallas about 27 hours after the surgery started and were in stable condition, bringing relief to a medical team that had prepared for more than a year for the intricate operation.

When news of the separation reached the parents, the boys' father jumped for joy and fainted, while their mother wept with joy, an Egyptian doctor who came from Cairo to be with the family told a press conference.

They will remain in a medically induced coma for several days as they begin the crucial post-operative period. It will be the first time they have slept apart from each other.

    [06] Islamic conference

Iraq's U.S.-picked Provisional Governing Council today stuck by its opposition to Turkish troops joining U.S. occupation forces there and won support for its stand from neighbouring Jordan.

The council's foreign minister and Jordan's King Abdullah, speaking ahead of an Islamic summit in Malaysia, both acknowledged a need for the international community to play a greater role in the reconstruction of Iraq.

But with the United States and its critics still debating what role the United Nations should play in Iraq, the council's Hoshyar Zebari said Muslim nations preparing for the two-day summit had expressed reluctance about sending troops.

King Abdullah, speaking in Singapore, said neighbours such as his own country or Turkey should not get involved.

Other delegates suggested there was a groundswell of support for a resolution calling for U.N.-mandated peacekeepers to replace U.S. forces.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Russia's President Vladimir Putin are among the invited guests at the conference.

The summit was also expected to finalise resolutions condemning Israel for attacks on Palestinians, and for carrying out an air strike on Syrian territory a week ago.

    [07] Iraq troops

The Turkish military said it had not yet reached a decision on how many troops it will deploy to help its NATO partner the United States secure post-war Iraq.

Parliament last week approved a government motion to deploy the troops as requested by the United States which is struggling to restore peace and stability to Iraq after ousting former president Saddam Hussein in April.

The head of military operations, speaking at a rare military news conference, said that it's still too early to give a definite figure related to the number of troops.

    [08] Neighbor police

Neighbourhood watch was launced today on an experimental basis in the Nicosia suburb of Strovolos, Kiti in the Larnaca district and Ayios Ioannis in Limassol. Thirty specially trained police officers are taking part. At a later stage, neighborhood watch will be enlarged, to cover all the urban and rural areas of Cyprus. Justice and Public Order minister Doros Theodorou stated that the scheme of the neighborhood policeman, aims at showing the social side of the police. In statements to our station, Mr Theodorou said that the goal is to develop a closer relationship between the police and the citizen so that they can work together against criminality.

    [09] Tailer

A two-seater sports plane on an unauthorised joyride was apparently shot down by mistake when it flew over a Serbian wedding party where guests were firing guns into the air.

Two men were reported to have been seriously hurt when their aircraft burst into flames and crashed near Kraljevo, central Serbia.

Local media said neither of the men held a pilot's licence.

Firing guns into the air at weddings and other celebrations is common in Serbia.
