[02] Tassos paradeThe president of the republic Tassos Papadopoulos expressed his complete satisfaction about the level of the Independence Day military parade held this morning in Nicosia. President Papadopoulos stressed that the weapons systems, the discipline and the excellent execution of drills, are an irrefutable proof of the readiness and the ability of the National Guard to respond to their role as a flexible, effective and deterrent force. The President also expressed his thanks to the Greek governmment for its complete and very important support in preparing the island's defence in the framework of the unified defence dogma. He congratulated the defence minister Koullis Mavronikolas, the National Guard chief, officers and soldiers, because, as he said, with their professionalism and responsibility, they have made the people of Cyprus, feel justly proud and confident, that they are ina position to defend their country. Called upon to comment on the absence of fighter jets from the parade, President Papadopoulos said this was a celebratory parade and not a show of strength. Commenting on developments in Turkey and the possibility of early elections next April, the President said that there is ample time to enter into substantive negotiations on the basis of the Anan plan.[03] PapantoniouGreek defence minister Yiannos Papantoniou also expressed his satisfaction about the operational readiness, discipline and excellent organisation of the defence forces of the republic. Mr Papantoniou said in the last few years, the credibility of the unified defence dogma has been greatly strengthened, a fact that improves the negotiating position of Cyprus in light of the crucial period that lies ahead. He added that it is up to the other side to realize what it's missing out on and finally concur to a solution of the Cyprus issue in accordance with the principles of international law. The Greek defence minister stressed that Greece and Cyprus are on the same path, and from a strong position, both politically and defensively, remain open to negotiations for achieving a solution, within the framework of efforts by the United Nations Secretary General.[04] Closson CyprusThe American ambassador in Nicosia Michael Closson stressed that the two choices for a solution of the Cyprus issue, are the Anan plan, or no solution at all. He expressed the view that the situation will become more complex, with the Cyprus republics' accession to the European Union. Therefore, he stressed, the United States are working on a daily basis in order to find ways to achieve a solution before the 1st of May, adding that the state departments' special envoy Thomas Weston will kick off another diplomatic tour in the area, in the next few weeks.[05] DenktashThe Turkish cypriot leader Rauf Denktash claimed that until today he has not met with the support he expected from the United States. He went on to critisize Washington for apparently meddling in the so called internal affairs of his illegal pseudostate. Denktash was commenting on a statement by the American ambassador in Ankara Eric Edelman, that the Anan plan is a historical opportunity for both sides on the island.[06] Iraq violenceProtests by frustrated jobless Iraqis in two cities turned violent as demonstrators threw rocks and set cars ablaze while local security forces responded with gunfire.In central Baghdad, a few dozen protesters looking for work at a U.S.-backed local security force hurled rocks at the building. Flames and black smoke poured from a police car and a civilian vehicle while gunfire echoed around the area. In the northern city of Mosul, a much larger crowd threw rocks at an employment office before marching to a local government building. Some storekeepers closed their shops. Security guards fired shots in the air and the crowd began to disperse. At the Baghdad protest, which took place near a hotel where many Western journalists and other foreign workers are based, police fired automatic rifles and pistols as demonstrators took cover behind nearby buildings. The violence lasted for around half an hour. U.S. troops arrived in the aftermath and secured the area. The U.S.-led administration running Iraq since the war that ousted Saddam Hussein in April disbanded the Iraqi army, viewing the force as a tool of the deposed Baath party. The administration is in the process of setting up a new army. International officials have estimated the unemployment rate in Iraq may be running at around 50 percent. [07] Florida BabyA 2-year-old girl whose mother was in jail survived alone in an apartment of Jacksonville Florida, for nearly three weeks on ketchup, mustard and food she found in the refrigerator and kitchen cupboards.The child's father found the toddler on Monday, draped in a towel and sitting in an infant's bathtub in her mother's apartment. Police have charged the mother, Dakeysha Telita Lee, 20, with child abuse for not telling them she had left the girl alone at home when she was arrested on Sept. 10 on an aggravated battery charge. The child, whose name was not released, was recovering from malnutrition and Florida's Department of Children and Families, the state child welfare agency, was investigating the case to determine where to place the girl.
