[01] headlinesThe visiting EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs points out the Union's ability to help towards a solution of the Cyprus Issue and the incorporation of the entire island into the current global economy, while the occupation regime leader continues to reject the Turkish-Cypriot support measures yet to be officially announced by the European Union; The President of the Republic will this Sunday be going to Athens for official contacts; A powerful earthquake rocks the North African country of Algeria; Last night's UEFA Cup goes to a Portuguese team for the first time ever; The official opening of the 28th Cyprus International State Fair takes place this evening; and... It's a sad day for world geography for the average American, even though there are exceptions. [02] diamanto prespalVisiting EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs Anna Diamantopoulou was this morning received at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. The almost 1-hour meeting between Commissioner Diamantopoulou and President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos was also attended by Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Makis Keravnos and EU Ambassador to Nicosia Adrian van der Meer. Following the Presidential Palace meeting, Mrs Diamantopoulou met with House President Demetris Christofias, while this afternoon she's scheduled to meet with Turkish-Cypriot party leaders. She'll also be giving an address at the Cyprus International State Fair opening scheduled for this evening, after which she'll be delivering a lecture on "Cyprus as an equal member in the formation of a strong Europe". EU Commissioner Diamantopoulou is scheduled to leave the island tomorrow afternoon. [03] diamanto statementIn statements after her meeting with House President Christofias, Commissioner Diamantopoulou noted that the European Union, in addition to being able to help towards a Cyprus settlement through supporting the work of the United Nations, can also make use of its institutional framework to secure a smooth and peaceful co-existence between the two communities on the island. The visiting EU Commissioner also noted that the Union can support the whole of Cyprus in the island's incorporation into the global economy by, in the case of a solution, allotting funds and announcing measures concerning infrastructure, human potential and commerce and trade. [04] denktash rejectOccupation regime leader Rauf Denktash is flatly rejecting the support measures to be extended to the Turkish-Cypriot community by the European Union, even before these have been officially announced. In an attempt to justify his decision, Mr Denktash claims that the proposed measures will not open the way to commerce and trade with his regime, but rather aim at Turkish-Cypriots being forced to recognise the Republic of Cyprus. "If," he went on to say, "the European Union truly intends to promote peace on the island, then it should not include in its proposals restrictions such as the export of Turkish-Cypriot produce only through Greek-Cypriot ports." In the same statement, the Turkish-Cypriot reiterated his positioning on two separate peoples on the island, adding once again that Turkish guarantees should be iron-clad and definitely not done away with. [05] tassos athensPresident of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos is to go to Athens this Sunday for talks with the Greek EU Presidency. His itinerary includes a Monday meeting with Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos, after which he'll hold talks with the country's Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, in light of the upcoming Thessaloniki European Council session. On Tuesday, President Papadopoulos will be discussing the latest Cyprus Issue developments at a joint session of the PASOK parliamentary grouping and the ruling party's central committee, while he'll also be meeting with opposition party New Democracy chairman Costas Karamanlis before returning to the island later in the day. [06] algeria quakeA powerful earthquake rocked the North African country of Algeria last night, measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale and burying hundreds of people in the capital, Algiers.According to the latest report filed by the Athens News Agency, the death toll stood at over 540, while those injured amount to some 5-thousand. The death toll however is expected to rise, given that scores of buildings collapsed during the quake, with entire families being reported buried under the rubble. Most fatalities occured in the Burmendesh-district town of Ruibah, where the dead exceeded 250. Some twelve hours after the quake, the epicentre of which was located near the town of Thenia, post-seismic tremors still continue to spread panic among local residents who spent the night outdoors. The earthquake was felt as far away as Spain's Balearic Islands and the Hiberian peninsula's eastern shores. [07] uefa cup finalPortuguese football team Porto won the UEFA Cup last night when Derlei Silva scored a dramatic silver-goal winner five minutes before the end of extra time for a 3-2 victory over 10-man Celtic. The Brazilian striker lashed home his second goal of the night to settle a thrilling encounter at Seville's Stadio Olimpico and give Porto their first European trophy since 1987. Celtic had recovered from 1-0 and 2-1 down as Swedish striker Henrik Larsson twice cancelled out goals for Porto by Derlei and Dmitri Alenitchev in normal time. The Scottish side were then rocked five minutes into extra time when defender Bobo Balde was sent off after earning a second yellow card. Derlei made them pay with his 12th goal in the competition this season just when a penalty shootout was looming, making Porto the first Portuguese club ever to lift the UEFA Cup. [08] fair openingThe 28th Cyprus International State Fair is to be officially opened at 7:30 this evening by President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos. This year's Fair will be open to the public as of tomorrow, 23rd of May, from 6 to 11 p.m. except on Saturdays, when opening hours are 6 p.m. to 12-midnight, and will be closing on Sunday, June 1st. Tonight's opening ceremony will be carried live on our Second Television and First Radio Channels, leading -- unfortunately some would say -- to no "Bold and Beautiful", and our evening's TV News bulletin going out at 7:15. [09] tailerA 14-year-old taught at home by his mother beat 54 other students to win the title of US National Geographic Bee champion yesterday, as well as a prize worth 25-thousand dollars. After blitzing through a series of stumpers such as questions about volcanic formations in Tanzania, James Williams from Washington State correctly answered a tie-breaker about which country possessed the Indian state of Goa until 1961. Runner-up Dallas Simons said the United Kingdom, but James, who missed just three questions during the two-day competition, gave the correct answer, Portugal. The competitors however are a far cry from the vast majority of young Americans. About 11% of Americans aged 18 to 24 cannot find their own country on a map, while another 50% percent could not, according to last year's National Geographic-Roper Global Literacy Survey, properly identify China, the United Kingdom or Japan, leading to the US being placed second to last and in front of only Mexico in terms of geographic literacy. As the current US president himself once said: "Nigeria and other European countries...." [10] weatherPartly cloudy conditions are forecast for this afternoon, leading to scattered showers and the occasional thunderstorm inland and over the mountains. Winds will abate to light north-to-northwesterlies, 2-3BF, on slight seas, while temperatures will be dropping to 17C inland and in coastal regions, and 12C on the highest reaches of the Troodos mountains. The fire hazard is very high in all forest areas. Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
