    [02] Anan Cyprus

UN Secretary General Kofi Anan called on Greece and Turkey, to reach an agreement the soonest possible on the issue of security on Cyprus, within the framework of his plan. He also stated that he would do everything possible to achieve a solution by the 28th of February, but refrained from saying whether he was going to submit a new revised plan. Mr Anan's appeal for agreement on security issues is included in official letters sent to the prime ministers of Greece and Turkey, Costas Simitis and Abdullah Gul. According to a source in the Greek foreign ministry, the sending of the letters was disclosed by Mr Anan himself to Greek foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou, during a meeting yesterday in New York. Mr Papandreou expressed the readiness to discuss the issue of security at the table of negotiations, in order to agree on this aspect.

    [03] Iraq US

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell failed to persuade key Security Council members to back an early war in Iraq as attention shifted to a weekend trip to Baghdad by the top U.N. arms inspectors.

French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin told Europe 1 radio the time was not right to discuss a new U.N. resolution opening the way for a U.S.-led war to rid Iraq of any hidden weapons of mass destruction.

After Powell's highly technical 80-minute address yesterday, nearly every council member agreed that Saddam Hussein's government fell far short of compliance with U.N. resolutions, but few made the leap to suggesting Iraq presented a big enough threat to warrant war.

The next step is a trip to Baghdad this weekend by chief U.N. inspector Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei, who heads the nuclear inspections. The two address the Security Council on February 14.

    [04] Gul war

Prime Minister Abdullah Gul declared meanwhile, that Turkey's troops would not fight in any U.S.-led war in Iraq and said he still held out hopes for a peaceful solution.

The NATO member is, however, in the process of gradually opening its bases to allow U.S. forces to attack Iraq if war breaks out over Iraq's alleged development of banned weapons. Parliament is due to vote on Thursday to allow U.S. technicians and troops to upgrade Turkish bases for use in any attack.

A second parliamentary decision to allow a larger U.S. presence that could stage a possible invasion of northern Iraq is due to come before parliament on February 18.

Turkey opposes any war as potentially destabilising and has campaigned with regional countries to try to bring a peaceful settlement.

Ankara also fears economic disruption could undermine the country's recovery from economic crisis.

    [05] Turkey Erdogan

The head of Turkey's ruling party, Tayyip Erdogan, will apply today to stand in a by-election next month, an aide said, opening the way for him to win a seat in parliament and eventually become prime minister.

Erdogan, former mayor of Istanbul, led the Justice and Development Party (AKP) to an overwhelming victory in a November general election, despite his political ban stemming from a jail sentence in the 1990s for inciting religious hatred.

Erdogan will apply to stand in polls on March 9 in southeastern Siirt province, where the November results were cancelled after voting irregularities were discovered.

Financial markets want swift resolution of Erdogan's role, fearing political instability as Turkey prepares for a possible war in neighbouring Iraq.

The government has said it will ask the AKP-dominated parliament to support a request to open Turkey's bases to U.S. troops if Washington attacks Iraq.

    [06] Cse today

The All Shares price index at the Cyprus Stock Change was up today by a marginal zero point zero four percent, closing at 88 point 28 units. The volume of trading slumped further, merely reaching 328 thousand pounds.

    [07] Tailer

Two flea market jewellers were arrested on charges of practicing dentistry without a license after an undercover investigation found they were gluing gold inlays to people's teeth from the back of their 10-year-old Honda.

Word-of-mouth marketing drew several customers a day who flipped through a photo album of styles before bargaining over the cost of the cosmetic procedure that could range from 150 dollars to a thousand.

"They could give you a whole rack of gold, or just cover a few teeth. They even had gold vampire fangs, if that's what you wanted," said Jim Leljedal, a spokesman for the Broward Sheriff's Department.

Investigators said Island Gold Enterprises Inc. was operating from the Swap Shop flea market in Fort Lauderdale for more than a year before police were tipped off by an unhappy customer whose teeth were damaged.

When the inlays are not properly applied, food can become trapped underneath, causing infection, and disease.

The idea is not to lose your teeth. This is not the way to do it, said Enrique Torres of the Florida Department of Health.
