[01] HEADLINES-- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said Cyprus will be an exemplary member of the European Union, just as it was during the accession negotiations.-- Greek PResident of the Republic, Costis Stephanopoulos, described as "very important event" Cyprus' accession to the European Union, noting that it proves how right Cyprus and the government is in their cause. -- Reaction continues in the Turkish occupied north against the Denktash policy on Cyprus -- A meeting which examined measures to financially strengthen Turkish Cypriots took place today at the Presidential Palace. -- Three top Iraqi ministers insisted that Baghdad would cooperate fully with U.N. arms experts to disprove U.S. and British accusations that it still held weapons of mass destruction. And, -- Israeli soldiers shot dead three Palestinians, including two Hamas Islamic militants, in the Gaza Strip today. [02] KASOULIDESForeign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said Cyprus will be an exemplary member of the European Union, just as it was during the accession negotiations.He said the diplomatic service has been instructed to work towards this and a number of meetings will be taken to take more decisions. In statements to CyBC's third Radio Channel, Mr. Kasoulides referred to the reaction of the Turkish Cypriots against the Denktash policy, saying we are witnessing the beginning of the post-Denktash era in Cyprus since it is evident that it has lead the Turkish Cypriot side to failure and isolation. He said the Greek Cypriot side should now extend a generous hand to the Turkish Cypriots. [03] STEPHANOPOULOS cYPRUSGreek PResident of the Republic, Costis Stephanopoulos, described as "very important event" Cyprus' accession to the European Union, noting that it proves how right Cyprus and the government is in their cause.President Stephanopoulos made the statement after he was informed today by Prime minister Costas Simitis on the results of the Copenhagen European Council. Mr. Stephanopoulos congratulated Mr. Simitis and the greek government for helping Cyprus achieve a positive outcome. He also praised the president of the New Democracy party and other political party leaders in Greece for contributing to Cyprus' success. [04] TC MEASURESA meeting which examined measures to financially strengthen Turkish Cypriots took place today at the Presidential Palace.Taking part at the meeting which will resume tomorrow were the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Finance, the Undersecretary to the President, the Attorney General, the government Spokesman, the Legislation Commissioner and a representative the Cyprus EU negotiating team and bureaucrats. Attorney=General Alecos Markides said the measures are such which will not reinforce Rauf Denktash's demand for recognition of his illegal regime. He repeated that Cyprus' accession to the EU includes Turkish Cypriots. [05] DENKTASHReaction continues in the Turkish occupied north against the Denktash policy on Cyprus.Turkish Cypriot politicians and Turkish Cypriot press, in articles, accused Rauf Denktash for being responsible for the non-solution to the Cyprus problem resulting with the non-accession of the Turkish Cypriots in the European Union. They called on him to resign from his post as interlocutor. The leaders of the Turkish Communal Liberation Party and Republican Turkish Party Hussein Angolemli and Mehmet Ali Talat respectively also called for Rauf Denktash's resignation and early "so called elections". [06] IRAQThree top Iraqi ministers insisted that Baghdad would cooperate fully with U.N. arms experts to disprove U.S. and British accusations that it still held weapons of mass destruction.Scores of arms inspectors visited nine suspect plants today as and British planes attacked what Washington said were anti-aircraft artillery sites in a no-fly zone in southern Iraq. Iraq said the jets had hit civilian installations and that Iraqi anti-aircraft and missile batteries had fired back. In London, opponents of Iraq's President Saddam Hussein agreed on a political blueprint for the country's future, calling for a federal and tolerant Iraq if Saddam is ousted. Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz, meanwhile, branded U.S. President George W. Bush a warmonger and hypocrite. He said that Mr. Bush was "driving America to a hostile imperialist policy" that was dangerous for both the United States and the world. [07] MIDEASTIsraeli soldiers shot dead three Palestinians, including two Hamas Islamic militants, in the Gaza Strip today.Palestinian witnesses said troops killed the two Hamas members as they tried to sneak through a security fence into Israel near the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun and killed another Palestinian as he walked past an army checkpoint. Israeli military sources said the third man may have been among a group of gunmen who shot at soldiers guarding a Jewish settlement in the central Gaza Strip. The sources said soldiers returned fire but could not say if they hit anyone. Israeli-Palestinian violence has showed no sign of abating despite Washington's call for restraint as it seeks Arab backing for a possible war on Iraq. Hamas said yesterday it was not prepared to enter any dialogue aimed at stopping "resistance" against Israel, which it said should continue even inside the Jewish state. [08] INDIA VIOLENCETwo men died in India's western Gujarat state as supporters of the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party took to the streets to celebrate its election victory.Violence between rival party supporters is common in Indian elections, and the toll of two dead was relatively low by the standards of polls in some other states. At least 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died in Gujarat in a spree of revenge killings after 59 Hindus were burned to death when their train was torched by a Muslim mob in the Gujarati town of Godhra on February 27. [09] MARKIDES ELECAttorney General Alecos Markides said that for the time being he is not concerned about the forthcoming presidential elections.Replying to rumours about his possible candidacy during the elections, Mr. Markides told CyBC that at this moment he is too concerned about the Cyprus problem and he does not intend to deal with this issue, for at least a few more days. He said he will deal with this issue only when he feels that he can. [10] BANK OF CYPRUSThe Bank of Cyprus announced that tomorrow it will carry out a work stoppage from 12 midday.The Bank of Cyprus employees work stoppage is to show solidarity to their colleagues at JCC payment system company, which has been on strike since last month. [11] WEATHERThis afternoon, the weather will be partly cloudy with some rain over the south. Winds will be north-easterly to easterly moderate, three to four beaufort and strong on the south and east coast, reaching five beaufort.The sea will be slight to moderate on the south and rough on the east. Temperatures will rise to 14 C inland, 17 C on the coasts and eight over the mountains. Tonight, it will gradually become cloudy with some light rain. Winds will be north-westerly to westerly light, two to three beaufort, reaching four beaufort in windward southerly and easterly areas. The sea will be slight to moderate, becoming high on the east and south coast. Temperatures will fall to eight degrees inland, 12 C on the coasts and three over the mountains.
