[01] HEADLINES

--- A reparatory meeting will be held in New York, in view of talks to be held there on October 3 and 4, between UN chief Kofi Annan, President Clerides and Mr. Denktash.

--- Israeli army bulldozers demolished the family homes of two Palestinian suicide bombers today, after yeasterday's Palestinian suicide bombing.

--- The United States and Britain will try to craft a resolution setting timetables for arms inspections in Iraq.

--- A dollop of dog excrement on a Queensland robber's shoe has been used as evidence to identify him, landing him with a 10-year stretch for a betting shop hold-up on Australia's Gold Coast.

[02] Talks

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has said that today's talks would focus on the executive and legislative authorities of the central state, to be formed after a settlement.

Since Monday, parallel talks are held between the aides of both President Clerides and Rauf Denktash.

CyBC sources said Attorney General Alecos Markides and the Turkish Cypriot leader's advisor, Mumtaz Soysal, have already met twice.

A decision will be made today on whether the aides will continue their talks or not.

Sources said no progress has been made so far.

[03] NY meeting

This meeting will take place a couple of days before Kofi Annan meets the leaders of the two communities.

The UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, will be flying to New York on September 28 for the preparatory meeting.

Also participating in the meeting will be the US and British envoys for Cyprus, Thomas Weston and Lord David Hannay.

[04] Kasoulides

They discussed Rauf Denktash's most recent document, which Mr. Kasoulides dismissed as unacceptable.

Talks also covered the prospects of reaching a Cyprus settlement before the Copenhagen European Council in December, which is expected to invite successful candidates to join the European Union.

[05] NonAligned

Mr. Kasoulides was addressing the Ministerial Meeting of the Non Aligned Movement, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

He urged the Turkish side to grasp the opportunity, listen to the international call and work with the Greek Cypriot side to reach a settlement, based on Security Council resolutions.

He also expressed Cyprus' gratitude to the Movement for its support in condemning Turkish efforts to legalise the division of the island, brought about by military force.

[06] Larnaca death

The accident occurred when Zanou collided violently with a car being driven by forty-six year old Costas Phillipou, also from Larnaca.

Zanou was driving on the straight of Patihi Avenue, from the Fire Station towards the Arches when he reached the cross roads with Faneromeni Avenue, which is controlled by traffic lights. It was here where the collision with Phillipou's car, which was turning left, had occurred.

The fifteen year old was not wearing any head protection, and died from head injuries.

Mr. Phillipou left the accident virtually unscathed but was admitted to Larnaca Hospital for precautionary reasons.

The fire, which had potential to cause serious damage, spread onto a near by parked car owned by Angela Siampi.

Both cars were parked in a car parking area for the Four Lanterns Cottage in Bayiasit Street in Limassol where both women live.

The fire was extinguished by the fire brigade.

[08] mid east

In new violence, Palestinian hospital officials said a 10-year-old boy had been found dead with a chest wound in the West Bank town of al-Bireh after witnesses reported Israeli army gunfire in the area. The army did not immediately comment.

In the town of Abu Dis on the outskirts of East Jerusalem, the army demolished the homes of two Palestinian youths who blew themselves up in rapid succession in central Jerusalem last December, killing 11 people.

Israel says such demolitions are intended to deter further attacks in the two-year-old uprising against Israeli occupation. But violence has continued, and the end of the six-week lull has raised fears in Israel that it may face a new wave of attacks.

[09] iraq inspection

But a senior Western envoy said a document was not expected to emerge until next week while the two allies sought at least partial agreement from Russia, France and China, who hold veto power in the 15-member council.

Russia opposes any resolution before U.N. weapons inspectors are back on the ground following Iraq's decision on Monday to let them return without conditions. France has reservations and China is expected to abstain on any measure that hints war.

Police said on Thursday they had used enhanced photos from a security camera to match the pattern of excrement found at the crime scene to that on 26-year-old Jacob Smith's shoe.

Smith, who had wrapped a sheet around his face to hide his identity during the heist, was jailed in June for 10 years and 10 months on charges of robbery, being armed and in company and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

[11] Phones

The Cyprus Telecommunication Authority has announced drastic cuts in telephone charges.

Among others, as of October 1st, charges for calls from land lines to Greece will be cut by 44 percent, to Germany by 60 percent, to Britain and the United States by half, and to Australia by 78 percent.

Furthermore, calls using CYTA's So Easy card drop from 10 to 8,6 cents per minute when dialling a mobile phone, and from 10 to 8 cents for other calls.

Low use mobile phone users will receive bills reduced by 70 percent, while standard ones by 52 percent.

Charges for calls from mobile to mobile will be reduced by 12 percent for low use customers, and by 28 percent for standard ones.

The special CYTAGSM service from 10 pm until 7 am will continue to be 1 cent per minute.

SMS fans will be glad to know that they will be able to send 30 messages a month charge free. All extra messages will cost 1 cent each.

[12] Weather

Winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate, three to four beaufort, over slight seas.

Temperatures will reach 30 degrees inland and along the south and east coasts, 28 along the west coast, and 21 over the mountains.

Tonight will be clear.

Temperatures will drop to 19 degrees inland and along the coast, and to 13 over the mountains.

The fire hazard is extremely high in all forest areas.
