[01] HEADLINES

Turkey's prime minister asks the EU to set a definite date for the commencement of accession negotiations, while the chairman of the country's Nationalist Action Party warns of an imminent crisis in Cyprus, and the occupation regime leader comes under more criticism;

The World Congress of Overseas Cypriots, held in Nicosia over the last few days, wrapped up its working with a press conference this morning;

A large quantity of ecstasy pills is found by Police in Limassol;

[02] CLERIDES DENKTASH

Today's will be the second session of the sixth round of talks between the two leaders, and is being realised just a few days before the 3-way meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Paris on the sixth of next month.

The first session of the current round focused on the question of sovereignty, with discussion of the matter expected to continue today.

Attending the 4 p.m. meeting will also be the UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor for Cyprus, Alvaro deSoto, who was received at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia this morning.

Also arriving on the island today is Britain's Special Representative for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay, in order to hold contacts in a run-up to the Paris meeting.

[03] ECEVIT EUROPE

In a letter to the 15 EU Foreign Ministers in view of the bloc's informal meeting in the Danish town of Elsinore, Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit maintains that his country has fully responded to issues pointed out during the Laaken and Seville meetings, and has even carried out the required constitutional reforms.

Asking that a definite date for the commencement of accession negotiations be set at December's EU Copenhagen summit, Bulent Ecevit also mentions that this would speed up and institute the required reforms, particularly if the European Union supports the process through what he described as "significant economic and technical assistance."

[04] BAHCELI CYPRUS

According to the Turkish-Cypriot press, Bahceli also openly wondered if the political groupings led by Tansu Ciller, Mesut Yilmaz and Ismail Cem are actively seeking the formation of a new government in Turkey so that they may, in his expression, "surrender Cyprus".

Elaborating further, Devlet Bahceli noted that it was during the Ciller-Yilmaz government alliance that Turkey amended its capital punishment law and eased restrictions on the teaching of the Kurdish language, in what he described as "an act of obeisance to the European Union".

[05] IZCAN CY

Izet Izcan goes on to fault Mr Denktash for not respecting either international law or UN resolutions, and also for failing to acknowledge even those agreements bearing his signature.

Commenting on Rauf Denktash's expressed intent to hand over control of the pseudostate's Foreign, Defence and Economy affairs to Turkey, Mr Izcan said that this aims at making official Ankara's domination over the occupied areas, and that an annexation of these by Turkey would not be at all different from the 1974 coup d'etat on the island.

[06] OVERSEAS CYPRIOTS/RESOLUTION

In their final communique, the Cypriot expatriates ask both the Government and the island's political parties to act in concert and efficiently, in close co-operation with Greece, so that a solution to the Cyprus Issue may be found. At the same time, they also express their determination to intensify the public information campaigns being held in their respective countries in relation to the island's long-standing problem.

The resolution was approved unanimously by the Central Councils of the diaspora's two main bodies, POMAK and PSEKA.

[07] ECSTASY LIMASSOL

The Amathus area apartment is rented to a 34-year-old man from Nicosia, who however lives in Limassol proper.

Also found during the raid were small quantities of heroin in cannabis resin, as well as 1,710 pounds in cash.

A search of the suspect's regular residence in Mesa Yitonia came up with a set of electronic scales and a strongbox.

The suspect has been detained pending further investigations.

[08] PRIMARY EDUCATION

New registrations and transfers will only be accepted in the case of the family having moved during the last year.

Primary pupils should attend school on Thursday, September 5th, in order to be given books and be assigned to classes, while regular lessons will begin on Monday, September 9th, with kindergarten schooling set to begin in stages on the same day.

[09] TURKEY COWS

Local alderman Osman Terzi said health and safety officials had ordered the cows to be cleared out of the first and third floors of the building in the Black Sea port city.

"I have learned that Fatma Kocaman has started selling her cows, which is a very pleasing development," the Anatolian news agency quoted him saying on Thursday. The agency also said that she had kept "a large number" of cows there.

Terzi went on to say: "It's hard to believe someone would keep cows in an apartment. For years me and the locals have wondered what to do...The area has suffered a lot. Noise, smell and manure everywhere make a very ugly scene."

And all this, in a country which strongly aspires to join the European Union...

Animal behaviourist Hermann Bubna-Littitz, professor at the Veterinary University of Vienna, said that the specific music he has in mind is designed to lull cats into a pleasant, relaxed state.

In a statement issued just yesterday, Bubna-Libbitz said, in a direct quote, "We were able to prove with guaranteed statistics that our house cats sought out the proximity of the loudspeakers when we played this music...and the tendency towards aggressive behaviour declined."

The secret? "Music for Cats and Friends", produced by "petsandmusic.com", and featuring electronically-composed numbers such as "Moonlight Walk", "Endless Time" and "Coming Home", with the two compact discs retailing at 19.50 euros each.

That's for cats of course. As regards man's best friend, the producers said they're not planning a canine cover version, essentially letting dogs..... go to the dogs!

Generally fair conditions are also forecast for this evening, with winds abating to light northerlies, 2-3BF, on smooth to slight seas, and temperatures dropping to 19C inland and in coastal regions, and 16C on thye higher reaches of the Troodos mountains.
