    [02] Papa arrival

Greek foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou arrived in Cyprus around noon, for a two-day official visit.

Developments in efforts to solve the Cyprus issue and Cyprus' successful accession to the European Union, are on the agenda of his talks.

At the moment, he is holding talks with foreign minister Ioannis Casoulides.

The two officials will host a joint press conference at around twenty to three, that will be carried live by our stations' first television channel and the first radio programme.

At nine this evening, the Greek foreign minister will take part in an exclusive news programme of our station, in which he will be quizzed by reporters regarding developments in the Cyprus issue, Euro-turkish and Greco-turkish relations.

    [03] Casou pap

Meanwhile, in statements to our station, Ioannis Casoulides said that Mr Papandreou arrives in Cyprus at just the right time.

Explaining his view, Mr Casoulides said that solution efforts are entering a new phase, the European accession course is down a new stretch and aggressive turkish diplomacy had to be dealt with on various fronts. Therefore, he added, a common strategy has to be determined.

Mr Casoulides added that Mr Papandreou is here to listen to the Cyprus government views as well as deliver his own, while at the same time explaining to the public opinion on the island, how affectionate Greek policy is towards Cyprus.

The foreign minister also said that Mr Papandreou, will explain how Greco-turkish rapprochement can be utilised for Cyprus' benefit.

    [04] Casou Denktash

Commenting on provocative statements by turkish-cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, that settlement talks need to be held on the basis of the so called realities on the island, Ioannis Casoulides said that the occupation leader is trying to get as much as possible, by using his favourite method, just before the talks.

The foreign minister also called on the UN chiefs' advisor on the Cyprus issue, to consider Denktash's provocations and constant garrulity.

Mr Casoulides reiterated the Cyprus governments' position that talks need to begin where they left off, adding that previous rounds were held on a particular basis and particular work has been done.

In case anything changes, he added, the Cyprus government is entitled to examine it and decide accordingly.

    [05] Poos today

The European parliament in Strasburg, will discuss this afternoon, the report submitted by the rapporteur for Cyprus accession to the European Union, and former foreign minister of Luxemburg Jacque Poos.

According to the Cyprus news agency, the Cyprus parliamentary delegation already in Strasburg is continuing contacts with various European parliamentary groups, in its effort to secure a resolution, that will be as favorable as possible for Cyprus.

The Cyprus delegation met with Mr Poos yesterday.

The discussion of the report will begin at four in the afternoon and will conclude approximately four hours later.

Voting on the report will be held tomorrow, at around noon, Cyprus time.

    [06] Electrocution Limassol

A 25 year old Hungarian was electrocuted last night in an apartment he was viewing, with the purpose of renting, at a residential complex, in the Limassol district area of Yermasoyia.

The man died instantly, when he opened the stove oven. It all happened, in the presence of his girlfriend, as well as the administrator of the building and his wife,

Government pathologo-anatomist that performed an autopsy, concluded that the young mans' death was caused by a faulty connection of the oven's electric wires.

The Hungarian, had arrived in Cyprus in early August and was working at a shipping company.

    [07] Mideast wrap

A Palestinian suicide bomber disguised as a bearded ultra-Orthodox Jew today blew himself up in Jerusalem, wounding 13 people and threatening to derail a new European ceasefire initiative.

The bomber wore the skullcap and black garb of a devout Jew and a fake beard. He blew himself up on the edge of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood of Mea Shearim in West Jerusalem.

The explosion occurred during the morning rush hour on central Nivvim Street, a block from a pizza restaurant where a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 15 people on August 9.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which coincided with a peace mission by European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana aimed at ending an 11-month cycle of Israeli-Palestinian violence that has killed more than 700 people.

Solana was trying to arrange talks between Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, possibly as early as Friday, on the sidelines of a business conference near the Italian city of Milan.

    [08] Shark Attack

A man was killed and a woman critically injured in the United States, when a shark attacked the couple as they swam off the North Carolina coast.

It was the second fatal shark attack of the U.S. Labor Day holiday weekend. On Saturday, a 10-year old boy was killed in Virginia,

The couple was attacked as they swam near a sandbar about 6 to12 metres off the beach near Avon, a remote town along North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands.

The beaches along the Outer Banks, a popular vacation destination, remained open.

Although the number of shark attacks and fatalities has been down this year compared to past years, the attacks have drawn widespread media coverage this summer following the dramatic rescue of an 8-year-old boy in Florida in July.

Worldwide, 49 attacks had been recorded, with 38 of those reported in the United States and 28 of those in Florida. That compares to 84 recorded worldwide last year, including 53 in the United States and 37 of those in Florida.

    [09] Winslet divorce

British actress Kate Winslet, star of the blockbuster movie "Titanic", has separated from her film director husband Jim Threapleton after less than three years of marriage.

According to Winslet's spokesman, it was an amicable and respectful separation.

The announcement came as a shock to many who perceived Winslet's marriage to Threapleton as the picture of domestic bliss.

Winslet had hinted recently that her personal life was not all plain sailing.

The couple has a daughter, Mia, that celebrates her first birthday, next month.

Winslet was catapulted to international stardom by her role in "Titanic", but she has largely turned her back on Hollywood blockbusters to appear in a clutch of smaller films.

    [10] Tailer

A 31-year-old Briton swallowed his way into the record books by opening and eating 97 oysters in three minutes to claim the title of world champion.

John Wright, a carpenter from Chertsey in Surrey, said that the trick was to swallow straight away, don't chew them and don't put too many at once in your mouth.

"Once it was all over I had to have a Mars bar," he added, admitting to having started the day with a burger breakfast.

The Guinness Book of Records confirmed he would receive his certificate once his feat had been double-checked.

The previous record-holder was James Arney, of north London, who ate 64 in three minutes last year.

Eleven contestants in all, made their bids for glory, at the Mango Tree restaurant in central London, no less.
