    [02] Antenna meeting

Cyprus republic anf British Bases experts today held a new meeting over the issue of the new antenna at the Akrotiri area.

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides stated yesterday that political decisions will be reached, in accordance with the results of investigations by experts, regarding effects on the environment, and the health of the locals, by the operation of the new antenna.

    [03] British antenna

British experts claim that there are no adverse reprecussions to the environment, by the already existing antennae at the British Bases in Akrotiri.

A report, conducted last February and submitted to the Cyprus foreign ministry, claims that the new antenna which the British wish to install in the area, will be of low frequency and its electro-magnetic emissions, will be within the internationaly acceptable levels.

Therefore, the British experts conclude that reprecussions on the enviroment by the new antenna, will be negligible.

    [04] Report antenna

Contradicting the British report, is another study conducted by two Greek experts, who warn that the operation of the antenna will have serious repercussions on the environment, because it will cause a break-down of the delicate structure of the area.

Its also noted that the use of weed killers for keeping vegetation at a low height, contradicts the logic of nature preservation.

The report also concludes that the operation of new antennas, will increase dangers on birds, which will smash into them, especially during the night, or will be forced to seek ways of by-passing them, meaning that they will have less strength to survive their migrating journey.

    [05] Hasikos antenna

Defence minister Socratis Hasikos said that the National Guard has no knowledge of reports that the British have electronic war equipment at Akrotiri, that affects National Guard defence systems.

Mr Hasikos, referred to such reports as mere hearsay.

He added that the National Guard expects the British to co-operate and provide all the evidence requested, so that military experts can reach conclusions, regarding the purpose of the new antenna.

    [06] Anasta letter

The Democratic will send an official letter to Greek foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou, in which it will express its concern, over the low-profile policy of the greek government in Greco-turkish relations.

The letter will either be dispatched later today or tomorrow.

Democratic rally leader Nikos Anastasiades said that his party is categorically in favour of improving Greco-turkish relations.

However, he added that low-profile policy should not be one-sided and Turkey must abandon its take, without giving policy.

In statements to our station. Mr Anastasiades said that Greco-turkish rapprochement must be carefully laid out in content, so that along with so-called low-level politics, big issues such as the Cyprus problem, can also be discussed.

He added that if this situation continues, the two sides will give the impression that Greco-turkish relations are improving, but the Cyprus problem will not have been discussed.

    [07] Dutch Cypru

The Cyprus problem and the republics' accession negotiations were at the forefront of a meeting between President of the Republic Glafkos Clerides and a delegation of the Foreign affairs Commitee of the Dutch parliament.

The delegation, earlier met with the House of Representatives president Dimitris Christofias. The Cyprus problem and the accession course, were again at the forefront of talks.

The visit is considered particularly important, because the Dutch parliament is the only one that has opposed Cyprus entry to the Union, without a previous solution of the Cyprus problem.

    [08] Cyprus heatwave

A heatwave will plague Cyprus for the next few days.

Temperatures will rise to 39 degrees, one more than yesterday.

Tomorrow and Thursday, temperatures will soar to 40 degrees.

Warm winds from the East are the cause of the heatwave.

However, what's positive, is that humidity is low and discomfort should be less.

People with heart diseases should take extra precautionary measures, staying in cool places.

Special measures should also be taken to protect children from sunstroke.

    [09] Fire ends

A huge blaze that broke out late yesterday afternoon between the Paphos district villages of Critou Terra and Skoulli, was put out a few hours later.

It scorched two square kilometres of shrubland.

Firemen stayed in the area throughout the night in case it sprang up again.

    [10] Road closed

The fast lane on the Larnaca-Nicosia highway from the village of Koshis to either direction, will be closed until three o'clock, because of cable setting by the tele-communications authority.

Works will be completed in four days.

The telecommunication authority has informed the public that, in co-operation with police, it's taking all necessary measures for direction of traffic.

    [11] Tailer

Unlike many humans, Preta the dog goes to church every Sunday, and even walks 16 miles to get there.

Every Sunday for the last three years, the pooch has headed out of her owner's home in the northern Portuguese town of Sobrado at 5 a.m.

According to a local daily, former stray, Preta -- Portuguese for "black" -- walks alone to a church in neighbouring Ermesinde to take her usual place next to the altar in time for 7.30 a.m. mass. Whenever worshippers stand up or sit down, Preta does the same.

When mass is over, she usually walks back home. Sometimes Preta will return in a car -- but only with a human she knows, the newspaper said.

Congregations have grown at the church as many people come just to see Preta.

    [12] Weather

It will be mainly clear this afternoon.

Winds will be generally moderate, southeasterly to southwesterly, four beaufort, turning westerly in some areas, over slight seas.

Temperatures will reach 39 degrees inland, 33 on the south coast and 31 on the west coast.

Tonight it will be mainly clear.

Increased humidity, will lead to the formation of fog and low cloud.

Winds will be light variable, two to three beaufort, over slight to moderate seas.

Temperatures will fall to 24 degrees inland, 22 on the coast and 21 on the mountains.

The fire hazard is extremely high in all forest areas.
