[01] HEADLINES

--- Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence departed this morning for Brussels, to participate in separate European Union meetings.

--- Israeli troops entered a Palestinian area of the West Bank this morning hours after killing five Palestinian policemen and rocketing security targets in the Gaza Strip.

--- The Cyprus Airways board of directors meets today to finalise its decision regarding possible participation in buying out New Olympic Airways.

And

--- Medical examiner Eleni Antoniou has announced the first results of the tests carried out on samples taken from 14-year-old Giorgos Hadjidemetris, who died in the Nicosia General Hospital on April 30, while undergoing surgery.

Also on the agenda is the European Court of Human Right's ruling regarding Cyprus' case against Turkey.

Mr. Anastasiades added that in the mean time reports would be drafted on the European Court of Human Rights' ruling against Turkey, so that it may be utilised better by the political leadership.

AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias said the President had reassured him that no final decisions were made in Athens and that all issues, including the European Court's ruling, would be discussed by the National Council.

Democratic Party President Tassos Papadopoulos said he exchanged views with President Clerides regarding various scenaria on the Cyprus problem, adding that the National Council was as important as any president made it and it was up to the president when he would call a meeting.

The President of the Social Democrats Movement Vassos Lyssarides said it was better to exchange views prior to a National Council meeting, noting that there was nothing so pressing that would impose a meeting at this time.

President of the United Democrats, George Vassiliou, said there were no developments that would justify an immediate National Council meeting.

[04] Kasoulides

Speaking at Larnaca Airport, Mr. Kasoulides said the meeting was significant, as the Council had undertaken the responsibility to monitor Cyprus' accession course.

He said the joint position of the 15 members of the bloc was especially positive in all aspects of the accession course.

Referring to Turkey's negative reaction to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights, Mr. Kasoulides said that if Turkey took into consideration international law and order, it would not have invaded Cyprus in the first place and would not be violating human rights.

[05] Hasikos

Speaking on his departure this morning for Brussels, where he will take part in the session of EU member and candidate states' defence ministers, Mr. Hasikos said the possibilities Turkey may react were high, but noted that the Cyprus delegation was ready to respond.

He explained that Ankara opposed Cyprus' participation in the rapid reaction force and that the Cypriot delegation's reaction would be relative to what was said at the session, taking into consideration the Turkish approach and the behaviour of the 15 EU member states.

In a night of intense violence, Israeli soldiers demolished a Palestinian police station in a suburb of the West Bank Palestinian-ruled town of Tulkarm and then entered the town and destroyed a house.

Earlier, a Palestinian ambulance officer said his crew had found the bodies of five men from the Palestinian National Forces shot dead by heavy machinegun fire and dumped in a hole in the ground near Beitunia, west of Ramallah.

It was the highest Palestinian death toll since late March and brought to 418 the number of Palestinians killed since a revolt against Israeli occupation erupted last September after peace talks stalemated.

Earlier, Israeli helicopter gunships and naval boats destroyed at least eight armoured personnel carriers in a fierce missile strike on Palestinian security targets in Gaza.

Helicopters hovered over a security compound 300 metres from Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Gaza City headquarters before they opened fire.

Tension was expected to rise before tomorrow's anniversary, which Palestinians mark as the Nakba or "Great Catastrophe" of their uprooting from towns and villages in the first Arab-Israeli war.

The Cyprus Airways board of directors meets today to finalise its decision regarding possible participation in buying out New Olympic Airways.

The board's President, Haris Loizides, told CyBC that Cyprus Airways' proposal may be accompanied by certain preconditions.

He also said Cyprus Airways was interested in the deal, but noted that there was speculation regarding the viability of the enterprise.
