European People's party president Hans Petering said that a continuous and intensified dialogue regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem, is necessary, given the republic's entry in the European Union,

[02] Cem Cyprus

Speaking in Washington, where he is holding talks with American officials with a view to upgrading American-turkish relations, Ismail Cem said that no progress has so far been achieved in the proximity talks under the auspices of the United Nations.

In response to a comment by the Cyprus ambassador to Washington, Erato Markouli, that Cyprus joining the European Union would benefit both communities on the island, the turkish foreign minister said that if there is an agreement and subsequently Cyprus joins, then definitely Turkey will support it.

He added, however, that if Cyprus joins before a solution is achieved, there will be many problems.

[03] Petering Cyprus

During a meeting with the President of the Republic Glafkos Klerides, Mr Petering stated that the family of European Union member states want Cyprus to join as soon as possible, and the last remaining dividing wall in Europe, be brought down.

He added that even if any country doesn't allow the re-unification of Cyprus, this doesn't mean that the EU entry process, won't be continued and be completed.

He also rejected turkish foreign minister Ismail Cem's threats that if Cyprus joins the European Union, there won't be any restrictions in her actions, saying that his party will not tolerate any threats regarding the freedom to make decisions.

The meeting of Hans Petering and the parliamentary group of the European Peoples Party with the President of the Republic, took place, in the presence of DISY leader Nikos Anastasiades.

[04] kox Clerides

After a meeting with President Clerides this morning, Mr Kox added that his visits to Nicosia, Athens and Ankara, are designed to give the Cyprus issue a new push, in light of the republic's bid to join the Union.

Referring to efforts for a peaceful and just solution of the Cyprus problem, the European official said that the international community should make the best of opportunities as they arise.

[05] Hasikos Athens

The headquarters controls all air operations, also covering Cyprus, in the framework of the United Defence Dogma.

Mr Hasikos also visited the National Centre of Air Operations, which also receives pictures from the National Guard Radar system in the Troodos mountains, for complete coordination of the General Staff of the two countries as far as air military operations are concerned.

According to our correspondent in Athens, the defence Minister expressed thanks about what Greece offers in efforts to upgrade Cyprus defences as well as the Unified Defence Dogma.

Mr Hasikos also said that there is continuous implementation of programs regarding Cyprus'air defence. Cyprus is operationally ready in this field, he added, but its systems need upgrading.

Socratis Hasikos later visited the Headquarters of the First Regiment of the Regular Army.

[06] Vasiliou Solana

Mr Vassiliou briefed Mr Solana on Cyprus' progress in entry negotiations after yesterday's meeting of the Inter-governmental Conference, as well as how negotiations are to proceed.

He also referred to Turkey's intransigent stance regarding a solution of the Cyprus problem, as well as turkish efforts to promote a confederation solution, something unacceptable for the Cyprus government.

Mr Vassiliou said that this last fact, brings Turkey in direct confrontation with the European Union, which has made clear that it cannot accept two separate states as members, a fact reiterated by Commissioner for Enlargement, Gunther Verheugen.

[07] Mideast Wrap

The rallies in Arab towns and villages within Israel hold the potential for further violence while Israel remains locked in conflict with Palestinians waging a six-month-old uprising in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Siding with Israel its long-time ally, the United States accused Palestinian President Yasser Arafat of failing to end the bloodshed that began six months ago after unsuccessful U.S.-sponsored efforts to forge a final peace deal.

Speaking at a news conference, US president George.W.Bush sent a clear message to the Palestinians, to stop the violence.

Secretary of State Colin Powell also made the point in a telephone call to Arafat later, a day after Israeli helicopter gunships attacked Palestinian security targets in the West Bank and Gaza in retaliation for bombings by Islamic militants.

Israeli soldiers killed three Palestinians in the Gaza Strip yesterday.

At least 359 Palestinians, 13 Israeli Arabs and 69 other Israelis have been killed since the uprising, or Intifada, erupted in late September.

[08] Crash Gulfstream

Several witnesses reported seeing the aircraft burst into flames after it crashed about a mile, northwest of the Pitkin County Airport.

The flight originated with a crew of three in Burbank and picked up 15 passengers at Los Angeles International Airport before heading to Aspen.

Witnesses, who reported that emergency vehicles arrived about 10 minutes after the accident, said it was snowing at the time of the crash.

Tim Jackson, a pilot, said landing at the airport in Aspen can be tricky and that the wreckage of the plane spread over an area 300 to 500 feet wide.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement the agency sent a team to Colorado to look into the crash.

[09] Drugs Paphos

According to our correspondent in Paphos, men of the drug enforcement service, stopped the man's car for a check, whereupon he locked the doors and swallowed the contents of a bottle he was holding.

After a search, police found traces of kannabis in the bottle.

Scientists at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston said mice that had been genetically modified to lack a key enzyme involved in fat metabolism ate as much as 40 percent more food than normal mice but weighed 10 to 15 percent less.

The researchers said their findings could pave the way for the development of a drug that would target the same enzyme in the human body, providing weight loss without requiring people to eat less or exercise more.

According to the head of the study, this would be great for the couch potatoes, guys who can sit on the couch, eat chips, watch TV, without worrying about having a bigger paunch.
