    [02] COCA SHIP

The captain of a Liberian registry ship today handed over to the police a quantity of five and a half kilos of cocaine.

Police and Customs officials early today conducted a search of the ship on the captain's information that drugs were among his cargo.

The captain had reportedly the German owner company about the illegal cargo on July two.

As a sequel the liaison of the German police in Cyprus was informed and he, in turn, informed the Cyprus authorities.

A message about the suspicious parcel was also sent to the Cyprus Anti-Drug Squad by the owners of the ship.

When discovered the cocaine was packed in 16 parcels which were confiscated and taken to police headquarters. The value is estimated at over one million Pounds.

    [03] SOLOMOU

Turkey once again finds itself in the dock of the accused over its crimes in Cyprus.

The European Court has accepted the suit filed by the family of Solomoos Solomou who was murdered in August 1996 during the incidents at Dherynia.

He was shot dead in cold blood by the so called Agriculture minister of the Denktash regime at that time, Kenan Akin.

The European Court accepted the suite in principle, while a trial on the essence of the matter will be held after the Summer.

According to the usual procedure followed by the European Court after the decision accepting the suit filed, an effort will be made for an out of court settlement, and if this fails the trial will be set into motion.

In its decision accepting the suite filed by the Solomou family, the European court raised the general issue of Turkey's commitment to respect all

personal rights and liberties on the territories which it has occupied militarily.

    [04] GOVERNMENT /COHEN

Government spokesman Costas Serezis said the government does not connect the tour of US Defence Secretary, William Cohen, to Greece and Turkey with the Cyprus issue.

The government also expects a dead period on developments due to the August Holidays.

Next week Cohen is expected to visit first Athens and then Ankara during his tour of Europe which starts tomorrow.//

Cohen will be the first senior US Government official to visit the two countries after the Papandreou-Cem agreement to seek ways for Greek-Turkish co-operation.

Pentagon officials said Washington wants to contribute towards easing tension between the two countries over Cyprus.//

Serezis, however, discounted any connection of this with the Cyprus problem. At the same time he refused to comment on the demands of Rauf Denktash for confinement of the negotiations process strictly to proximity talks.

The spokesman added that the president of the republic will make the decision when he gets the Kofi Anan invitation.

    [05] AKEL CC

According to the Central Committee of AKEL the Cyprus problem is in the worst state today than ever before.

A resolution approved today severely criticises the government which, it states, is responsible for the current situation.

However, the resolution underlined that the main responsibility rests with the Turkish side.

AKEL believes that resolution 1250 and the secretary general's good offices incorporate serious weaknesses which give the Turkish side the opportunity to table unacceptable positions at the negotiations table.

By contrast, resolution 1251, on renewal of UNFICYP's mandate, has positive elements such as the reference to the unacceptable status quo, and the form of the attempted solution.

Secretary General Demetris Christofias also disagreed with the process followed by Dame Ann Hercus.

AKEL, he said, does not consider it correct that Dame Ann meets the two leaders separately, without informing the one about the positions of the either, and then goes ahead to prepare reports based on her personal analysis.

    [06] IRISH

An Irish Parliamentary delegation which is on a visit said that Cyprus will have many financial as well as political benefits from accession to the EU.

The delegation under committee chairman Bernard Dircan, discussed the accession of Cyprus with House President S[yros Kyprianou.

He said he believes that Cyprus. like Ireland, will increase its piolitical as well as financial status by accession.

The Irish official drew a parallel between the Cyprus and the Irish problems adding that much has changed in the case of his country after the start of the peace process.

Kyprianou expressed satisfaction with the visit of the Irish delegation which also met the Foreign and European Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives.

    [07] TURKISH MINISTER

Turkish Finance Minister Hikmet Ulucbay attempted to take his life.

He had led the Turkish delegation in talks with the International Monetary Fund, and last week he came under criticism for leaking to the mass information media a confidential document on the talks.

It is surmised that it is this fact which led him to take his life.

His wife and son were witnesses to the attempted suicide of the 60-year old minister.

After hearing a shot they rushed into his room while he was trying to shoot himself in the head.

His sun stopped the attempt and Ulucbay was rushed to a private Ankara clinic with serious head injuries.

    [08] MURDER

A Syrian holder of a Cyprus passport was arrested for the murder of young Ukrainian artiste Natalie Cordova which was committed in the Czech Republic on July four.

He was identified as Mansur Jiaur, 43, who was remanded for eigt days by the Nicosia District Court today. He is a legal resident of Cyprus who was married to a Cypriot woman in 1983.

Police said he was sought for another case, and when he was found he had stated he was away in the Czech republic and returned to Cyprus only the day before yesterday and that he was a witness in the case of his Ukrainian girl friend Natalie Cordova.

He alleged that two masked men had broken into their Czech apartment and murdered Cordova, adding that out of fear he fled returning to Cyprus on the day after the murder.

Cyprus police contacted the Czech authorities who found Cordova dead after a search.

    [09] FISHERMEN

The fishermen's protest demonstration at the presidential palace is over and the demonstrators dispersed after the president agreed to see them on Wednesday.

The fishermen spent the night outside the presidential palace and were visited this morning by an AKEL delegation under the party spokesman Andreas Christou.

He accused the government of duplicity, and favouritism against the professional fishermen.

    [10] SPUDS

The government will give its full support to the potato growers who, for the fourth year running, are facing problems with the marketing of their crop.

Speaking before today's Cabinet meeting Commerce Minister Nicos Rolandis said the ministerial committee in cooperation with government officials will estimate the amount of losses suffered and will then proceed with its aid.

This morning the potato growers co-ordinating committee, together with agrarian organisation representatives, conferred with Finance Minister Takis Clerides.

In statements representatives of the growers said that the marketing situation is calamitous, with the result that their debts have increased and they are in a desperate state of affairs.
