[02] KOSOVO POLIT

NATO insists on placing the Russian troops under its own command.

Deputy secretary of state Strobe Talbot said after his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanof that differences remain but he also spoke of certain positive developments.

After lauding Russian contribution to the end of the bombing, Talbot also welcomed Russian participation in the peace force.

However he underlined that Washington insists on an integral command so that Kosovo, as he put it, is not separated into segments.

Ivanof in his reply to Talbot stressed that Russia not only wants to avoid the division of Kosovo but works towards keeping it as one part under a sovereign and territorially integral Yugoslavia.

negotiations have now passed on to the highest level with presidents Clinton and Yeltsin discussing the matter during the meeting of the group of 8 next week.

Ivanof underlined that deployment of the Russian troops was undertaken on the personal decision of President Yeltsin.

[03] KOSOVO TROOPS

British and French troops have also arrived in the Kosovo capital, but they were forced to spend the night in the suburbs.

Shortly before noon today, a French contingent with 15 military vehicles attempted to enter the airport but it was stopped and prevented from doing so by the Russians.

General Clark stated after the incident that the NATO forces were not planning to establish a headquarters at the airport nor were they planning to use it for their deployment operations,.

He added that the Russian military presence is a political matter and will be handled as such.

The ethnic Albanians are welcoming the NATO troops with cheers.

On the other hand the wave of Serbs who are abandio9mning their homes for other areas of Yugoslavia is continually increasing.

[04] CLERIDES BACK

The position of China on Cyprus, he said at Larnaca airport, is clear -- the solution must be based on the UN resolutions.

He added that China supports the independence, sovereignty, unity and integrity of the State of Cyprus.

The president also said that it was established during discussion of international affairs that the position of the two countries is parallel in respect of the policy needed for entry into the 21st Century.

Commenting on the postsion of the Group of 8 on Cyprus President Clerides said the declaration has two positive elements: --that the solution must be based on the UN resolutions, and second that it calls on the two sides not to set preconditions.

We, the president added, have never set preconditions because the resolutions are not a prerequisite but define the parameters set by the UN Security Council itself.

[05] ANASTASIADES

Speaking to the press in Paphos he added that there must be no complacency, however, but we must remain alert and carefully study the various scenaria to be presented on a solution.

He also said that the expected creation of tension by Turkey after the solution of the Yugoslav crisis is a usual and expected phenomenon and will be handled with determination by the government.

[06] DEFENCE

He will be returning to Cyprus on Sunday 20 June and will leave for Athens on the next day for talks with Greek National Defence Minister Akis Tsohadzopoulos. He said he hopes that important decisions will be taken.

The minister added that the National Guard is constantly vetting the combined exercise of the Turkish armed forces now in progress North of Cyprus, and there is no reason for concern.

[07] EURO ELECTIONS

Britain, Den]ark, Holland and Ireland have already completed theirs.

The European parliament with a total of 626 seats is dominated by a Socialist majority of 214 seats, with the Christian Democrats holding 201.

[08] GREEK ELECTIONS

The polls will close at seven this evening when poll forecasts will be announced. Counting of the votes will start two hours later at nine tonight, at the same time when counting will start in all EU member states.

Collective results on about 10 percent of the vote ,maybe announced at 11 tonight, and this percentage is considered as a safe prediction of preferences.

During the 1994 election PASOK won 10 seats, New democracy nine, the Communist party, the Coalition of the Left and Political Spring won two seats each.

[09] DIOXIN

In Greece, Agriculture Minister George Anomeritis advised consumers to avoid using Belgian cosmetics as a preventative measure, if they contain animal fats.

However, representatives of the National Pharmaceutical Organisation stated that the amount of dioxin that the skin can absorb are negligible.

In the United States the ban Belgian imported goods has also been extended to eggs, and egg derivatives from France and Holland.

Import from animal feeds from all of Europe has also been banned.

In Belgium itself the need for supply of dioxin free products nearly led to a tragedy. Twenty people who gathered outside a grilled chicken establishment, waiting to buy dioxin-free chickens were injured by the explosion of a gas cylinder.

[10] TRIFYLLIOS

A bazaar was helt afterwards in Phaneromeni Square aimed at promoting traditional crafts by specialist craftsmen and members of the poly-craft Centre of Chrysaliniotissa.

A photography exhibition on Saint trifyllios and Church frescoes was also held.

Saint Trifyllios, student of Saint Spyridon was the first bishop of Ledra in the Fourth Century AD.

[11] WEATHER

Winds will be light and variable and the sea will be as light.

Temperatures will drop to 19 C inland and on the coasts and to 14 C over the higher mountains.

The weather will be clear tomorrow, but local cloud may bring isolated storms and showers mainly over the mountains and inland.

Winds will be moderate sea breezes and the sea will be moderate in windward areas in the afternoon.

Temperatures will rise to 33 C inland, 29 C on the coasts and 23 C over the higher mountains.
