    [02] YUGOSLAVIA WAR I

NATO has targeted the financial, political, and communications apparatus of Slobodan Milosevic, aiming at their total destruction. The crash of an Apachi attack helicopter and statements by Drascovic cause concern in the West.

    [03] YUGOSLAVIA WAR II

NATO planes last night continued with their strikes against the Yugoslav television network. For the second day running, NATO planes hit a multi-storey building housing the Socialist party in Belgrade, which also had a transmitter on the roof. NATO described the building as the heart of the political authority of Milosevic. Despite extensive damage, however, Yugoslav television continues to broadcast normally from Belgrade, through private channels. Pristina, in Kosovo, was also hit by seven missiles, and Novi Sad capital of Voivodina was also targeted.

Confusion reigned among the Americans because of the crash of one of the Apachi attack helicopters stationed in Albania. The Americans announced that both pilots managed to escape from the craft before it burst into flames.

Meanwhile the West is concerned after the statements of alternate federal prime minister Vouk Drascovic who called upon Milosevic to give the people a more realistic picture of the situation of the country after the bombing

    [04] CLERIDES - PRESS

The Americans have assured president Glafcos Clerides that in September they will be launching an initiative on Cyprus together with the UN and the group of Eight. This was revealed by the President personally during last night's news conference. Results of all these efforts, the President added, will, in the end, depend on the composition of the new Ecevit Government and Western pressures upon Ankara. President Clerides went on to say that the Greek Cypriot side set no preconditions at all for the start of negotiations. He added that neither did the British Government set any conditions for attending the talks.

Referring to the Kosovo crisis the president said Cyprus supports the Kosovo must remain in aside Yugoslav borders, insists on the return of refugees under conditions of security, and a peaceful solution. The President also supported deployment of an international force and opposed any form of national cleansing.

    [05] CHRYSOSTOMIS

The non-deployment of the S-300 missiles in no way affected operation of the Andreas Papandreou Air Base, which will be used, should the need ever arise, under the joint defence doctrine.

Defence Minister Yiannakis Chrysostomis made the statement during a visit to the air base in Paphos together with National Guard Commander General Demou. The operation of the base is a matter totally separate from the missiles and efforts are in hand to make it operationally ready in the near future.// General Demou also said that the Andreas Papandreou air base is being used methodically in under plans for the conduct of exercises under the joint defence pact.

    [06] CHRISTODOULOU

As of July 1, district officers will be issuing passports while during the first three months of next year they will be in a position to issue identity cards in an effort to facilitate and speed up service to the public. Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou made the statement while briefing the leadership of the Public servants Trade Union on actions he is planning to improve service to the citizen.

He added that for the purpose of decentralisation District administration offices and district centres will have to undertake certain additional services. He added that it is his intention for the District Officers to take over the funds for execution of projects in their districts.

    [07] Cy-US-Turk

Bulent Ecevit continues to insist that the Denktash pseudo-state is an independent state, and added that the Greek Cypriots have not yet digested this fact. According to the Turkish Cypriot press Ecevit made his provocative statement during his illegal visit to the occupied area. Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem meanwhile alleged after his meeting with US Secretary of State Madlein Albright that Washington is seriously considering the confederation solution for Cyprus.

Meanwhile special co-ordinator on Cyprus Thomas Miller stated that the Cyprus issue is not one of the world problems that cannot be solved. Speaking before the Kokkalis Foundation in Washington Miller said that Russian co-operation was requested on Cyprus and argued that Greek-Turkish affairs and the Cyprus issue could be solved in one package.//

Addressing the same congress, former Greek foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos referred to Cyprus and supported the resumption of negotiations sso that problems could be directly dealt with. He added that the Clerides proposal for demilitarisation could be discussed under such a framework.

    [08] CASOULIDES

The very same principles that we are demanding for Cyprus must guide our policy for Kosovo according to Foreign Minister Ioannis casoulides. Speaking to the press in Limassol the foreign minister said Cyprus believes that the salvation of Cypriot Hellenism relies on accession to the EU. This, he strongly underlined, must be our top priority.

Casoulides said that one of the problems as well as messages is to what degree Cyprus is ready to contribute towards a joint foreign policy and to the security of the EU.

The foreign minister also pointed out that if Cyprus will disagree on every issue, this will only diminish the weight of its application for accession. Cyprus he said, must evaluate everything before making certain decisions. He also underlined that the national interest under current circumstances dictated that it should act in the way that it did.

    [09] PARTY REACT

DISY and the United democrats described the presence of President Clerides as a positive element.

AKEL was strongly critical, while EDEK expected a more serious analysis from the president on the serious problems facing the country.

SISY press spokesman Prodromos Prodromou said the president spoke with the seriousness which he is attributed and presented the report on the government's work on general but positive lines.//

AKEL press representative Nicos Katsourides that President Clerides said nothing new. He also argued that the President is ignorant of developments and facts on the Rambouillet accord, on Yugoslavia, as well as on the provisions of the UN Charter.//

DIKO Chairman Spyros Kyprianou found some mistakes in the references which the President made. In reference to the Cyprus issue, Kyprianou said that we have reached the point at which we consider even the prospect of a dialogue as progress,//

EDEK Chairman Vassos Lyssarides there was no deep analysis on a series of modern problems such as where is the Cyprus issue going in relation to where is humanity going.//

Vice Chairman of the united Democrats George Chrristofides said his party agrees and identifies with what the President said on the European orientation of Cyprus as well as on the processes for a Cyprus solution.
