PSEKA Cyprus Conference, 97-03-14Occasional Cypriot News Contributions Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: Giorgos Zacharia <lysi@kypros.org>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- MARCH 14, 1997 EIGHTH ANNUAL PSEKA CYPRUS CONFERENCE TO BE HELD JUNE 3 - 5, 1997 IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Today Philip Christopher, president of the International Coordinating Committee -- Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), announced that the Eighth Annual PSEKA Cyprus Conference will be held in Washington, D.C. June 3 - 5, 1997. “This year’s conference could possibly be the most crucial for Cyprus in all the years that we have been coming to Washington, D.C. We will be meeting with America’s top policy-makers in the U.S. Congress and the administration at a time that is expected to be the peak of a major U.S. and U.N. effort for a Cyprus settlement. As those who have been fighting on a daily basis for justice for Cyprus since 1974 know, this period could be the greatest window of opportunity for a just and viable settlement in the almost 23 years since the Turkish invasion and occupation. It is very important that as many people as possible attend this year’s conference,” said Christopher. “We will once again be meeting with over 30 chairmen, ranking Democrats and other key members of the foreign policy committees and subcommittees in the United States Senate and House of Representatives. We will also be meeting with the President’s top people handling U.S. foreign policy toward Turkey, Greece and Cyprus in the White House, the National Security Council and the State Department. In previous years, this group has met with President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, then-Vice President George Bush, then-Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs Tony Lake, as well as Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich,” said Andrew E. Manatos, president of The National Coordinated Effort and of Manatos & Manatos, which coordinates this annual conference. Those interested in participating in this conference, which will begin on the evening of Tuesday, June 3rd and run through mid-day on Thursday, June 5th, should contact the office of Manatos & Manatos in Washington, D.C. at (202) 393-7790 or Sophia Cotzia at the PSEKA office in New York at (718) 545-3533.
