UNFICYP REPORT ON SHOOTING INCIDENT NEAR LOUROUJINA ON
6 FEBRUARY 1997

Sunday 09/02/97

UNFICYP made the following observations and took the following actions concerning the incident:

(a) At approximately 02:30 hrs, a burst of about ten rounds of automatic fire was heard by an UNFICYP Observation Post and by an UNFICYP patrol base, the patrol base near Louroujina, which are located approximately 1.000 and 1.500 meters south-west and west, respectively, of the reported incident. Strong winds at the time made it impossible to determine the direction of the shots.

(b) At first light an UNFICYP officer was shown an intermittent, 5 m. long trail of blood stains in the immediate vicinity of an Observation Post located south-east of Louroujina at the Turkish Forces Cease-fire Line. The trail consisted of 5 spots of varying amount of blood leading from the flagpoles in front of the Observation Post towards the Buffer Zone, but not into it.

(c) UNFICYP thoroughly searched the Buffer Zone in the area concerned, both on the ground and from the air, and did not find anything which could shed further light on the matter.

UNFICYP has immediately increased its presence in the area concerned and is in close contact with the military authorities on both sides in order to defuse possible tension.
