[01] President Papadopoulos: Cyprus can become bridge for peace between East and West

"Cyprus, due to its geographical location and because of its accession to the European Union, can become a bridge for peace between East and West and can contribute to the consolidation of friendship and cooperation in Europe and the wider region of the Middle East", the President of the Republic Mr Tassos Papadopoulos has noted in his address yesterday to the "Peace Conference", organised by the Cyprus Peace Council. Mr Papadopoulos further said that peace and the solution of the Cyprus problem were linked, adding that peace on the island meant cooperation and solidarity between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in a unified and functional state, with a single international personality, where all citizens would be equal before the law. "The Cyprus Republic is still fighting for independence, territorial integrity, sovereignty and unification; It is fighting for peace and human rights; It is fighting for freedom", the President stressed, pointing out that Cyprus was now facing the "terrible danger of illegal settlement" in the occupied areas. President Papadopoulos reiterated the Greek Cypriot side's determination to work "consistently and with persistence" for a solution that would reunite the island. "To achieve such a solution we are ready to cooperate with all those powers willing to help and particularly with our compatriots the Turkish Cypriots, so that through negotiations we can render the Annan plan more functional in order for the solution to be viable and the foundation for peaceful coexistence", he added. Referring to the Cyprus Peace Council, the President said its struggles over the last 54 years for peace, detente, disarmament and the peaceful resolution of disputes, had to be acknowledged.

[02] Cyprus Republic honours Ihsan Ali

The unveiling ceremony of the bust of Dr Ihsan Ali, pacifist and genuine advocate of Greco-Turkish friendship and cooperation, took place last Saturday in Paphos. Addressing the ceremony on behalf of the Cyprus Government, Interior Minister Mr Andreas Christou said the Republic was honouring the scientist and visionary who had fought for the peaceful coexistence and solidarity of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. "The vision and struggles of Dr Ihsan Ali for the salvation of our common country remain the vision and goal of all Cypriots", Mr Christou noted and called on Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to work together for a peaceful and united Cyprus.
