[01] Foreign Minister leaves for US and Europe tour

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Georgios Iacovou, departed yesterday for New York where he will attend various meetings in the sidelines of the 58th annual UN General Assembly. Speaking to the press at Larnaca Airport prior to his departure, Mr Iacovou said that he would represent President Papadopoulos at a high-level meeting to review the global programme for combating AIDS. President Papadopoulos and Foreign Minister Iacovou will also hold a number of joint meetings as well as separate meetings with their counterparts. Most of Mr Iacovou's meetings would be with his counterparts from Islamic countries in view of the forthcoming Islamic Conference in Kuala Lumpur on 11 October, as he noted. On 23 September, the Foreign Minister will take part in an EU-Russia meeting during which the '25' will hold talks with Russia's Foreign Minister, Mr Igor Ivanov, to review developments. A similar meeting with the US Secretary of State, Mr Colin Powell, will be held on 26 September. Mr Iacovou will also attend a meeting of 18 small and medium EU member states, which will assess the progress made in the drafting of the European Constitution. On 27 September, the Foreign Minister will depart for Brussels to attend, on Monday 29 September, the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council and address the Cyprus-EU Inter-parliamentary Committee. He will then return to New York to continue his contacts before returning to Cyprus via Rome, where he will participate in the Intergovernmental Conference on the European Constitution beginning on 4 October. Replying to press questions, Mr Iacovou noted that during President Papadopoulos' meeting with the UN Secretary-General in New York, there would be an exchange of views and both sides would convey their positions. "However, there is a third side, the Turkish Cypriot side, which is far from the positions of the UN Secretary-General", he added.

[02] Belgium opens Embassy to Nicosia

In line with the policy promoted by the Belgian Foreign Ministry to establish diplomatic representations in all ten new EU member states, Belgium has opened an Embassy to Cyprus. Heading the new Embassy is Ms Colette Taquet, who took over as Charge d'Affaires a.i. of Belgium to Cyprus. The Belgian diplomat had been serving in the Belgian Embassy to London since 1999. She has also served in Belgium's Permanent Representations to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture (FAO) in Rome.
