[01] President Papadopoulos sends condolences for the death of the Swedish
FM
The President of the Republic, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, sent yesterday the
following letter of condolences to the Prime Minister of Sweden, Mr Goran
Persson, for the tragic loss of the Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh: "I
was greatly shocked at the news of the tragic loss of Anna Lindh, following
the abhorrent attach against her yesterday. Anna Lindh's commitment to the
universal values of peace and human rights and the active promotion of
these values made her one of the outstanding politicians of our times, both
within and outside Europe. The people of Cyprus and me personally are
particularly saddened by her tragic loss given the special bonds of
friendship and her interest in my country, which had been manifested even
so often. On behalf of the people and the government of the Republic of
Cyprus and myself please accept our deepest sympathy for this great loss
and convey to the family of Anna Lindh our sincere condolences."
Letters of condolences were also sent yesterday by the Foreign Minister, Mr
Georgios Iacovou and the President of the House of Representatives, Mr
Demetris Christofias. Furthermore, the Government Spokesman, Mr Kypros
Chrysostomides, expressed yesterday the Cyprus Government's deep condolences
to the family of Anna Lindh and to the people of Sweden. Mr Chrysostomides
said that the deceased was a friend of Cyprus and a strong supporter of the
island's accession to the EU, noting that she had been making efforts for
the right solution of the Cyprus problem and was particularly critical of
human rights violations in Turkey.

Turkish Cypriots, says Greek Foreign Minister
Cyprus' accession to the European Union will safeguard the security of both
Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, Greece's Foreign Minister Mr George
Papandreou has noted and called on Turkish Cypriots to become active
citizens of the EU. Speaking yesterday at a press conference after
concluding his two-day visit to the island, Mr Papandreou noted that the
security of the Turkish Cypriot community would not be guaranteed by the
occupation army but by their participation in the European family.
Referring to Cyprus' accession to the EU, the Greek FM pointed out that
"this has created new hopes and new dynamics and a new self-confidence for
the people of Cyprus". He added that the prospect of EU accession had
mobilised Turkish Cypriots who now had hope of coexisting with Greek
Cypriots in a reunited Cyprus, member of the European Union. Mr Papandreou
made special reference to his meeting with the leaders of the Turkish
Cypriot opposition parties and said he was deeply moved by his encounter
with Turkish Cypriots on Wednesday evening at the Ledra Palace. Regarding
the partial lifting of restrictions on movement by the illegal occupation
regime and the crossing of people along both sides of the divide, the Greek
official expressed certainty that it was a result of the new dynamic
created by the prospect of EU membership and said it had brought down the
"taboos" cultivated by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and certain
Turkish officials to support their argument that Cyprus had to remain
divided because the two communities could not coexist peacefully.
[03] Ambassadors of Uruguay and Venezuela present credentials
The new Ambassadors of Uruguay and Venezuela presented their credentials to
President Papadopoulos yesterday during separate official ceremonies at the
Presidential Palace. Uruguay's Ambassador to Cyprus, Mr Mario Alberto Voss
Rubio, referred to the excellent political and diplomatic relations between
Cyprus and his country and pledged to work hard to further enhance
bilateral relations. "At the same time as we offer our technological
cooperation in the agricultural domains, you will offer your rich
experiences through the tourism cooperation", he said.
The Ambassador of Venezuela to Cyprus, Mr Efrain Silva Mendez, said he was
deeply committed to doing everything in his power to further strengthen the
already good bilateral relations that existed in the areas of diplomacy,
politics, commerce and culture. Referring to the Cyprus problem, Venezuela's
Ambassador noted, "It is our wish that an equitable solution be found to
the matter of the unification of the island that pleases all the citizens
of this beautiful nation. May peace and prosperity be present always in the
island of Cyprus". Accepting the credentials, President Papadopoulos
informed the two diplomats on the latest developments regarding efforts to
reach a settlement to the Cyprus problem and underlined that the Greek
Cypriot side remained committed to engage in substantial negotiations on
the basis of the UN Secretary-General's plan, aiming to achieve the entry
of a reunited Cyprus to the European Union on 1 May 2004.
