[01] Cyprus withdraws reservation regarding death penalty for military crimes during wartime

The Republic of Cyprus has withdrawn its reservation concerning the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (15 December 1989), which reads as follows: "The Republic of Cyprus in accordance with Article 2.1 of the Protocol reserves the right to apply the Death Penalty in time of war pursuant to a conviction of a most serious crime of a military nature committed during wartime". The Acting Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Nations, Mr George Kasoulides, withdrew last week the reservation, deposited with the UN Secretary-General, on behalf of the Republic. During a short ceremony at the legal department of the UN, Mr Kasoulides conveyed the Cyprus Government's satisfaction with the fact that it had abolished the death penalty and was in full compliance with its international obligations and the acquis communautaire. He further pointed out that the death penalty had not been applied by the Republic of Cyprus for the last 33 years.
