[01] President Papadopoulos departs for St. Petersburg
The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, has
departed for St. Petersburg, Russia, this morning to attend the EU-Russian
Summit as well as the celebrations to commemorate the three-hundred-year
anniversary of the city. President Papadopoulos is accompanied by the
Foreign Minister, Mr George Iacovou, the Government Spokesman, Mr Kypros
Chrysostomides, and the Deputy Minister to the President, Mr Christodoulos
Pasiardis. He will return to Cyprus on 1 June, at 16:00.
[02] Economic Experts Council set up by the President
President Papadopoulos has decided yesterday to set up a nine-member
Economic Experts Council, under the former House President Mr Alexis
Galanos, which will advise the President of the Republic on economic policy
matters. The new advisory body will report directly to the President and
will be dealing with issues prescribed to it by the President himself. It
will also propose and examine economic issues, by virtue of its office
after acquiring the President's consent, and will submit reports to the
President of the Republic and the Minister of Finance.
The Council comprises of personalities from the private sector, who
participate strictly in their personal capacity. Council meetings will be
attended ex officio by the Director General of the Planning Bureau and the
Director of the Economic Research and Studies Department of the Ministry of
Finance.
[03] Cyprus and Libya sign agreement on Information
Cyprus and Libya signed yesterday a cooperation agreement in the field of
information, within the framework of efforts to enhance bilateral
relations. The agreement was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the
Ministry of Interior, Mr Kyriakos Trantafyllides, and the Director General
of the Department of Information of the General People's Committee for
Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation of Libya, Mr Abou Al Khair
Jumaa. Present at the signing ceremony were the Libyan Ambassador to Cyprus,
Mr Khalifa Ahmed Bazelyz, the Director of the Press and Information Office,
Mr Yannakis Solomou, and the Director of the Cyprus News Agency, Mr Themis
Themistocleous. The agreement provides for, inter alia, the exchange of
knowledge and expertise in the information sector and cooperation among
audio-visual broadcasting agencies through the exchange of news programmes.
It also provides for assistance and facilities to journalists of the two
countries when they visit Cyprus and Libya respectively.
[04] Cyprus' High Commissioner to Mauritius presents credentials
Cyprus' Ambassador to South Africa, Mr Costas Leontiou, presented his
credentials last Tuesday to the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr
Karl Offmann, as the new High Commissioner of Cyprus to that country.
Presenting his credentials, Ambassador Leontiou briefed the President of
Mauritius on the latest developments concerning the efforts to resolve the
Cyprus problem. The two men exchanged views on ways to further enhance
bilateral relations.
