[01] President Papadopoulos: the Government should not impose restrictions
on the freedom of movement
The President of the Republic Mr Tassos Papadopoulos praised yesterday
Greek Member of Parliament and former Foreign Minister of Greece, Mr
Theodoros Pangalos for his instrumental and decisive contribution to
Cyprus' European Union accession course, after a ceremony during which Mr
Pangalos was declared honourary citizen of Lefkara village. Mr Pangalos was
one of the people who opened the road to Cyprus' accession, he said.
Invited to comment on the telephone conversation that the President of the
United States had with Turkey's Prime Minister, in which Mr Bush asked Mr
Erdogan to contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem, Mr Papadopoulos
said that the Turkish side and Mr Erdogan say they are contributing to a
solution by pointing out to the UN Secretary-General Mr Kofi Annan that the
proper solution is a solution of two separate states. In reaction to Mr
Bush's description of the Annan Plan as "just and balanced" President
Papadopoulos said that the American support for the Annan Plan as it stands
is well known. The Greek Cypriot side accepts the Annan Plan for negotiations,
provided that the proper changes, required by the new conditions and
Cyprus' accession to the European Union, are made. Commenting on the
incidents by the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied areas, in which
Greek Cypriot worshippers were forced by illegal policemen to leave the
Turkish occupied church of Agios Mamas in Morfou, the President said that
Mr Denktash wants, on one hand to promote the existence of his so-called
"state" and on the other to avert communication between the two sides.
Despite these provocations, the Government should not impose restrictions
on the freedom of movement "which is the foundation of our struggle" he
added. The President stressed that what is happening today, with the easing
of restrictions on the freedom of movement, "is not a solution, not even a
step towards a solution", adding that the Cyprus problem is not just the
freedom of movement, as it is imposed by Mr Denktash. "Mr Denktash wants a
solution based on two separate states with good neighbourly relations. Two
states that would solve their border problems. We will never accept that",
he concluded.
