[01] UN report clearly blames Denktash for impasse, says Government Spokesman

The UN Secretary-General's report on his peace-efforts in Cyprus was presented to the parties last Friday night. The report will be submitted to the UN Security Council which will hold consultations on Cyprus on 10 April. Commenting on the report last Saturday, the Government Spokesman Mr Kypros Chrysostomides made the following statement: "The report of the UN Secretary-General, which was handed to the parties last night and which was submitted to the Security Council that will look into the matter on 10 April, clearly puts the blame for the failure of his efforts towards a settlement of the Cyprus problem, from June 1999 until 11 March 2003, namely until The Hague, on Mr Denktash. The report constitutes a chronicle of Mr Denktash's refusal to engage in substantive and honest negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem. The Secretary-General mentions, in paragraphs 57 and 58, that Mr Denktash informed him in The Hague that he was not prepared to agree to put the Plan to a referendum and that he had fundamental objections to the Plan on basic points. It is also mentioned that Mr Denktash believed that any further negotiations were only likely to be successful if they began from a new starting-point and if the parties agreed on basic principles. He further added that Turkey was not in a position to sign the commitment that was required by the guarantor powers, according to the Plan. Turkey, as the Secretary-General mentions, cited previously unmentioned internal constitutional reasons."

[02] President Papadopoulos meets US Ambassador and UK High Commissioner

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, received the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Mr Michael Klosson, and the British High Commissioner, Mr Lyn Parker, in separate meetings last Friday, to discuss the Cyprus problem in light of the recent letter by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktash, to President Papadopoulos and the latter's reply. The Director of the President's Press Office, Mr Marios Karoyian, noted after the meetings that Mr Papadopoulos had briefed the two Ambassadors on the Government's position vis-a-vis the Denktash letter and its assessment of the move by the Turkish Cypriot leader.

[03] Cyprus signs recommendation on EU institutional reform

The Republic of Cyprus has signed a recommendation along with other fifteen members of the Convention on the Future of Europe, regarding the principles and prerequisites for the reform of EU institutions. The recommendation was endorsed by Denmark, Austria, Sweden, Portugal, Ireland and Finland, on behalf of the EU member states, by all the acceding countries except Poland, and by Bulgaria, from the group of the candidate states. In a press conference held last Friday at the European Parliament, the representatives of the sixteen countries at the Convention presented their suggestion and stressed that it did not aim at implementing radical changes at the community level, but rather at making reforms while maintaining the overall balance of the current institutional structures. On behalf of Cyprus, the recommendation was signed by Mr Michalis Attalides, Cyprus' representative at the Convention on the Future of Europe.
