[01] "President Papadopoulos was constructive at the UN talks", says UK
Minister
"President Papadopoulos has taken a constructive approach towards the UN
process", the British Minister for Europe, Mr Denis MacShane, said last
Monday in response to a question by Labour MP, Mr Andrew Dismore, before
the House of Commons. Mr MacShane added that at the meeting in The Hague,
on 10-11 March, the Cyprus President was prepared to put the UN solution
plan to a referendum, as the UN Secretary-General had requested.
[02] Government condemns bomb incident against US embassy
The Government Spokesman, Mr Kypros Chrysostomides, made the following
written statement last Monday: "The Government condemns yesterday's attempt
by a twenty-year-old Cypriot citizen to cause damage to the US embassy by
using a bottle that contained a flammable substance. It is stressed that
such actions neither promote the interest of the country nor respond to the
demands of the European nature of our country or civilisation.
The citizens are called to refrain from such actions that expose us
abroad. At the same time, the Government would like to praise the immediate
and effective intervention of the Cyprus police, which led to the arrest of
one suspect for the incident."
[03] Hadjidemetriou accepts President's proposal for Chief EU Negotiator
post
The former Member of Parliament, Mr Takis Hadjidemetriou, accepted a
proposal, made last Monday by the President of the Republic, Mr Tassos
Papadopoulos, to be appointed to the post of Head of the Negotiating Team
for the Accession of Cyprus to the European Union. The President's proposal
will be placed before the Council of Ministers tomorrow, 3 April, for
approval.
[04] US MP condemns arrests of T/C politicians in occupied areas
The Democratic MP Mr Robert Andrews, of New Jersey, condemned the recent
arrests of the Turkish Cypriot politician, Mr Izzet Izcan, and five trade
unionists by the illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus.
In his intervention before the US House of Representatives, last week, Mr
Andrews noted, "Mr Denktash has already harmed the people he is supposed to
represent by denying them the opportunity to unite with the Greek-Cypriot
neighbors and join the European Union in April, and it is absolutely
detestable to see him silencing the will of his citizens once again." The
US parliamentarian called on his colleagues to join him in condemning these
illegal acts of the occupation regime and to continue offering their
support to the people of Cyprus. He further called on the United Nations to
"persevere in their efforts to bring about a fair and agreeable resolution
to the longstanding division of the Republic of Cyprus." The illegal
arrests were made after Mr Izcan's party, the United Cyprus Party, planned
to hold its own vote - following Mr Denktash's refusal in The Hague to
allow a referendum vote on the UN solution plan - to demonstrate the desire
of Turkish Cypriots for a resolution of the Cyprus problem.
[05] New Cyprus High Commissioner to Seychelles
The Cyprus High Commissioner to Nairobi, Mr Constandinos Eliades, presented
his credentials recently to the President of Seychelles, Mr Frank Albert
Rene, as the new High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to that
country. Mr Eliades briefed President Rene on the latest developments
regarding the Cyprus problem, especially in light of the collapse of the
intensive UN-peace efforts in The Hague due to Turkish intransigence.
The President of Seychelles expressed his hope for a quick and just
settlement of the Cyprus issue, stressing that Cyprus could always count on
Seychelles for support.
