[01] Spokesman says the next four months will be most crucial for the future of Cyprus

The next four months will be most crucial for the future of Cyprus because during this time the Government will undoubtedly be confronted with many difficulties and challenges and will have to take difficult decisions, Government Spokesman Mr Michalis Papapetrou stated yesterday.

Addressing the 19th conference of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) and the First International Conference of Cyprus Youth Overseas, Mr Papapetrou pointed out that there is now more than ever before an intense interest on the part of the international community in the Cyprus problem and stressed that in this critical period, the Greek Cypriot side's moves should be such, so that things develop in a favourable direction.

Referring to the possibility of submission of proposals by the UN, the Government Spokesman said that the Greek Cypriot side would favour the submission of UN proposals on the Cyprus issue, as long as they are within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus.

He also expressed the opinion that the United Nations will not proceed with the submission of any proposals for the solution of the Cyprus problem before 3 November, when the elections in Turkey take place.

Referring to Turkish threats that a serious crisis will break out if the European Union accepts a divided Cyprus in its ranks, Mr Papapetrou said that Government policy should be aimed at those forces in Turkey that wish to see important changes taking place in their country and bringing Turkey closer to Europe. Cyprus has no intention of becoming a vehicle through which European fears would be increased, he added.

Finally, Mr Papapetrou underlined the need to utilise every opportunity and move offered, during this period, to break the deadlock and lead to a solution of the Cyprus problem.
