[01] Kasoulides: The partition of Cyprus is unacceptable

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, addressing the First International Conference of Overseas Cypriot Youth, yesterday, expressed satisfaction with the participation of the overseas Cypriot youth and the role they were called upon to play in the future.

In reference to the solution of the Cyprus problem, Mr Kasoulides said that the Cypriot side could not accept any solution that would include components that would allow the legal dissolution of the Republic of Cyprus and consequently, the legal partition of Cyprus.

Referring to Cyprus' EU accession course, Mr Kasoulides said that the decision that would be made in December at the High Level Council in Copenhagen would be a positive one for Cyprus. Cyprus' accession to the EU is a strategy that has been set on track, parallel to the efforts for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem. Let no one presume that the accession of Cyprus to the EU is pursued instead of a solution to the Cyprus problem or its reunification. Cyprus' EU accession course has always been a part of the efforts for the reunification of Cyprus. As decided upon at the High Level Council in Helsinki in 1999, the solution of the Cyprus problem is not a precondition for a positive decision on Cyprus' accession, Mr Kasoulides concluded.

[02] New Cyprus Ambassador to the Council of Europe

Ambassador Nicolaos Emiliou presented his Credentials to the Acting Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Hans-Christian Kruger as Cyprus' new Permanent Representative to the Council.

During the meeting that followed, Ambassador Emiliou conveyed to Mr Kruger the warm greetings of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and referred to Cyprus' dedication to the principles and the ideals of the Council of Europe. He also stressed the important role of the Council of Europe in the procedure of the European integration, an aspect of which is the establishment of the acceptance of the implementation and effective protection of human rights in the whole of Europe, underlining at the same time, the necessity for the implementation of all the European Court of Human Rights decisions.

Finally, Ambassador Emiliou briefed Mr Kruger on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and Cyprus' EU accession course.

[03] Cyprus joins the Council of Europe in protecting regional and minority languages

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the Council of Europe Ambassador Nicolaos Emiliou submitted on 26 August on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, the Instrument of Verification of the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages.

The Charter aims at the protection of historic regional or minority languages of Europe, some of which are in danger of extinction, and contributes to the preservation and the development of the cultural wealth and traditions of Europe.

In Cyprus, the Charter will be put in force on 1st December 2002.
