[01] EU Presidency adheres to Helsinki Declaration
"We stick to the Helsinki Declaration, according to which a solution to the
Cyprus problem would facilitate the enlargement of the European Union, but
that it is not a precondition", the Prime Minister of Denmark and EU
President Anders Fogh Rasmussen said, during a joint press conference with
the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, on 20 August 2002 in
Copenhagen.
Further explaining the Declaration, Mr Rasmussen added, "it underlines that
the European Council will take a decision - taking into account all
relevant factors.
Finally, the Danish Prime Minister called upon "both parties in this
conflict to do their outmost to find a solution to the Cyprus problem".
For his part, Mr Yilmaz, inter alia, said: "The Turkish government is ready
to make its part; to appear and settle this very longstanding and very
complicated international problem".
