[01] The two sides in Cyprus discuss the issue of missing persons

The issue of missing persons was discussed during a meeting held yesterday between the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Glafcos Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Rauf Denktash, after a meeting of the two leaders, within the framework of the UN-led direct talks.

The UN Secretary-General's Acting Special Representative in Cyprus Mr Zbigniew Wlosowicz, the Presidential Commissioner on Humanitarian Issues Mr Takis Christopoulos and the Turkish Cypriot representative to the Committee of Missing Persons (CMP) Mr Rustem Tatar were also present at the meeting.

During the meeting, the Greek Cypriot side handed to Mr Denktash its reply on his document on the issue of missing persons.

The two leaders will meet again on Friday to continue the fifth round of direct talks for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

[02] Foreign Trade Statistics for January - March 2002

The main developments in Cyprus Foreign Trade during the period January- March 2002 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totalled £588,4 mn as compared with £582,7 mn in the first quarter of 2001. Total exports amounted to £124,4 mn compared to £143,9 mn during the period January-March 2001. The trade deficit accounted for £464,0 mn compared to £438,8 mn in the corresponding period of 2001.

(b) Imports for home consumption totalled £525,4 mn compared to £523,5 mn in January-March 2001. During the first three months of 2002, intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £174,3 mn or 33,2%, followed by consumer goods with £144,8 mn or 27,6%, fuels and lubricants with £60,6 mn or 11,5%, transport equipment with £59,0 mn or 11,2% and capital goods with £57,3 mn or 10,9%.

(c) Domestic exports, including stores and provisions valued at £58,9 mn as compared with £56,3 mn in January-March 2001 and re-exports, including stores and provisions to £65,5 mn compared to £87,6 mn in the corresponding period of 2001. Industrial products of domestic produce exported in January- March 2002 accounted for £43,6 mn or 76,4% while exports of raw agricultural products valued at £12,8 mn.

(d) During the period January-March 2002 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £292,2 mn or 49,7% and absorbed goods amounting to £29, 4 mn or 51,4% of Cyprus domestic exports, excluding stores and provisions.
