[01] Cyprus becomes a full member of EUREKA

Since 28 June 2002, Cyprus participates in the European program "" as a full member, following a decision taken by the of the program, which was held under Greek Chairmanship, on 27 and 28 June in Thessaloniki.

Prior to this decision, Cyprus' application was evaluated in terms of the research profile presented by the Permanent Secretary of the Planning Bureau Mr Panikos Pouros, last April in Athens.

The Statement of Eureka Membership was signed by the Minister of Development of Greece, Mr Akis Tsohatzopoulos, on behalf of Eureka, and by the Permanent Secretary of the Planning Bureau, Mr Panikos Pouros, who was representing the Minister of Finance, on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus.

After signing the Statement, Mr Pouros thanked, on behalf of Cyprus, the Conference and the Greek Presidency for accepting Cyprus' application. Mr Pouros mentioned that Cyprus accepts and fully adopts the Research and Technology policy of the EU and that Cyprus' participation in the Eureka program would benefit all.

[02] Themistocleous expresses readiness for participation in bicommunal program

The Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Mr Costas Themistocleous had a meeting with the Presidents of the Community Councils of the occupied villages of Karavostasi and Peristeronari as well as with a representative of the "Eleftheri Soli" Association.

The meeting focused on the ecological destruction of the Karavostasi area and Mr Themistocleous outlined the measures being taken by the Government.

Replying to a relevant question, Mr Themistocleous expressed the Cyprus Government's readiness to participate in a bicommunal program to address the grave problem of the pollution of the land and sea in the Karavostasi area.

"We are interested in the protection of the environment in the whole of Cyprus, that's why we are ready to help within the framework of a bicommunal program for the restoration of the Karavostasi area" Mr Themistocleous said, adding that the Ministry of Agriculture was in tough with UNOPS.

[03] State Department Spokesman: US will remain active in Cyprus

During yesterday's regular briefing, the State Department Spokesman Mr Richard Boucher was asked to assess the Cyprus issue, since the deadline for a solution passed without any concrete result, in view of the fact that the US government was very much involved in the process, along with the United Nations.

Mr Boucher's reply was as follows:

"The goal of getting some kind of agreement by the end of the month of June was not met. We continue to consider it a very important issue and one that we want to pursue in conjunction with the United Nations. And I think you'll continue to find the United States as well as the United Nations very active in that regard."

[04] Cyprus UN permanent representative becomes Chairman of the Asian Group

The permanent representative of Cyprus to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zackheos has undertaken the chairmanship of the UN Asian Group, following a unanimous decision taken by the members of the Group on 1st July 2002.

The Asian Group, which consists of 52 member states, plays a coordinating role, especially on matters of candidacy, and carries out contacts with Chairmen of other geographical Groups, as well as with the UN Secretariat- General.
