[01] President Clerides meets with the Prime Minister of Sweden

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides had a meeting in Limassol on Sunday with the Prime Minister of Sweden Mr Goran Persson, who is currently in Cyprus on a private visit.

The Minister of Foreign affairs Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, the Chief Negotiator for Accession to the European Union Mr George Vassiliou, the Swedish Ambassador to Cyprus and the Undersecretary to the President Mr Pantelis Kouros attended the meeting, which was followed by a lunch given by the President in honour of the Swedish Premier.

Invited to make a comment on the meeting, President Clerides said that he briefed Mr Persson on the Cyprus problem and had a good talk with him on Cyprus' European Union accession course. The Swedish Premier congratulated him for Cyprus being the first candidate country in the harmonisation process with the acquis communautaire.

Replying to a question on the threats by Denktash that if Cyprus accedes to the EU, he would call on the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to withdraw from the Turkish occupied area, President Clerides said that if UNFICYP withdrew, it would be at the expense of Mr Denktash, while "we would be part of Europe".

[02] Minister of Commerce Industry and Tourism concludes visit to Egypt

The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr Nicos Rolandis concluded his official visit to Cairo, during which he discussed the trade relations between Cyprus and Egypt, investment and tourism matters, and the provision of Egyptian natural to Cyprus via Syria.

During the meeting between Mr Rolandis and the Egyptian Petroleum Minister Mr Sameh Fahmy, which was also attended by the Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Mr Ibrahim Hadad, the construction of a pipeline to carry natural gas from Egypt to Syria via Jordan and the building of a distribution plant in Syria, were discussed. It was determined that most of the problems that had arisen in the past regarding the transportation of natural gas to Cyprus had been overcome. Moreover, it was agreed that the five interested parties, i.e. Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus, would meet in mid-April in Amman, Jordan, to discuss the matter further.

Mr Rolandis also met with the Egyptian Prime Minister Mr Atef Ebeid, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Agriculture Minister and General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Party Mr Youssef Wali, the Foreign Minister Mr Ahmad Maher El Sayed, the Minister of Tourism Mr Mamdouh El Beltagi, and the Foreign Trade Minister Mr Youssef Boutros Ghali.

In the framework of his visit, Mr Rolandis presided along with the Foreign Trade Minister Mr Youssef Boutros Ghali the 4th Session of the Joint Cyprus- Egypt Trade Committee, during which the two countries' trade relations in the sectors of goods and services were reviewed. He also visited and inaugurated the Cypriot kiosk at the Cairo International Exhibition, and inaugurated the Cyprus Week organised by Cyprus Airways, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and Apollo Tours tourist agency.

[03] Cyprus urges the international community to support the efforts of small island states to achieve sustainable development

"Particular attention is required in order to address the special needs of Small Island States, which face certain critical challenges related to their unique economic, social and environmental vulnerabilities. Cyprus as a small island state shares many of their concerns and urges the international community and particularly the donor countries to support wholeheartedly their efforts to achieve sustainable development", the Cyprus Ambassador to the United Nations Mr Sotos Zackheos has stated.

Addressing the International Conference on Financing for Development organised by the United Nations at Monterrey Mexico, between 18-22 March 2002, Ambassador Zackheos underlined that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus is currently in the process of overhauling its assistance programmes both at the institutional and financial level. "Moreover, in a spirit of solidarity, Cyprus is examining ways of increasing its already existing emergency relief assistance" he said, adding that at the same time it will continue to support national development policies by providing technical assistance.

Ambassador Zackheos expressed Cyprus' full support for the Monterrey Consensus, a document that it considers to be instrumental for the achievement of the Millennium Declaration development goals of sustained economic growth, poverty eradication, and sustainable development.

Concluding, Ambassador Zackheos stressed that the grave daily reality of poverty and underdevelopment in many parts of the world, must be confronted with an open mind and determination. "The precarious state of the less fortunate of our community inhibits the prospects of economic growth at the global level and restricts the prospects for gaining the most out of globalisation. A serious engagement on the part of the international community will not only prove an emerging global ethos of compassion and solidarity but more importantly, it will constitute an act, which will, in the final analysis, serve our common interests", he said.

[04] President Bush refers to Cyprus talks

The President of the United States of America Mr George Bush, in his remarks at a Washington ceremony to mark Greek Independence Day (March 25), said that "America has been inspired by Greek ideals and enriched by Greek immigrants" and praised Greece's spirit of liberty and courage, "a spirit that values family and education and public service and faith."

"Just as Greece has stood side by side with the United States," he continued, "the United States stands ready to encourage the continued warming of Greek and Turkish relations. We welcome the resumption of diplomatic talks on Cyprus, and hope that they will lead to a final settlement that strengthens regional peace and stability."

[05] Presentation of Credentials

Cyprus Ambassador Charalambos Ioannides presented his credentials on 20 March to the President of Kyrgyzstan Mr Askar Akayiev as Cyprus' first Ambassador to Kirgistan.
