[01] President Clerides meets with the Vice-President of the European Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides received yesterday the Vice-President of the European Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly Mr Maurice Ligot, who is currently in Cyprus to prepare a report on Cyprus' EU accession course.

In a statement to the press after the meeting Mr Ligot said that President Clerides briefed him on the direct talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem and the island's accession talks with the European Union. Mr Ligot noted that the President naturally referred to the difficult problem of the reunification of the island and to the direct talks on the Cyprus issue, which do not seem to move forward and this seems rather discouraging.

Referring to Cyprus' EU accession course Mr Ligot, expressed the belief that the accession negotiations will be successfully concluded, that Cyprus will accede to the EU at the proper time and that it will find an equal place in the European Union together with the rest of the EU member states.

Finally, Mr Ligot said he believed that, as the convention on the future of the European Union would strengthen the authority and power of the European Union, so an empowered European Union would also strengthen Cyprus' position.

The French parliamentarian also met with the President of the House of Representatives Mr Demitris Christofias.

[02] EU Commissioner for Enlargement arrives today for talks

The European Commissioner for Enlargement Mr Gunter Verheugen arrives in Cyprus today for a two-day official visit.

During his stay on the island, Mr Verheugen will meet with the President of the Republic Mr Glafkos Clerides to discuss the enlargement process and be briefed on the current UN-led direct talks between the two communities.

Mr Verheugen will also hold talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ioannis Kasoulides and the Chief Negotiator for the accession negotiations, Mr George Vassiliou. He will also address the international conference on Enlargement organized by the Cyprus Council of the European Movement at the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia on Friday 8 March at 09.30 hrs.
