[01] Reference to Cyprus in final communique of the Commonwealth summit

The 35th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which began in Coolum, Australia on 2 March 2002, with the participation of Heads of State and Ministers from 53 country members of the Commonwealth, concluded its work today.

In their final communique, the Commonwealth Heads of Government included the following reference to Cyprus:

"Recalling and reaffirming previous United Nations Security Council Resolutions and reaffirming their previous communiques on Cyprus, Heads of Government welcomed the resumption of talks between the two sides under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary-General within the framework of his mandate of good offices mission as described in Security Council Resolution 1250.

They noted that progress could only be made at the negotiating table and encouraged all concerned to co-operate fully with the Secretary-General and his Special Adviser to show flexibility and negotiate to the conclusion of a just and lasting settlement consistent with relevant Security Council Resolutions.

Heads of Government reiterated their support for a Cyprus settlement that ensures the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of a reunited Cyprus."

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, in a statement to the press, expressed satisfaction with the reference to Cyprus because, as he said, it fully covers all the parameters, which the Greek Cypriot side considers particularly important.

Mr Kasoulides pointed out that the communique takes into consideration that there are talks currently in process and defines the principles on which it expects the solution to be found, namely the UN resolutions on Cyprus and the principle of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of a reunited Cyprus.

[02] President Clerides states Cyprus' support for Commonwealth youth initiative

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides has made the following statement in support of the Commonwealth 'Youth for future" initiative:

"I commend the HLRG proposal to create a 'Youth for the future' initiative and I am delighted to be able to participate in this exciting new programme.

Taking into consideration the importance of the eligible international programmes mentioned in the pan-Commonwealth initiative on youth, we are strongly interested to be involved in all the above mentioned initiatives"

[03] Cyprus undertakes search and rescue operations (SAR)

The Republic of Cyprus took over on 1st March 2002, the search and rescue operations (SAR) within the Nicosia Flight Information region (FIR).

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre, operating under the Ministry of Defence, at Larnaca International Airport will carry out this task. It will coordinate all flying and floating means, land teams and other services involved in operations aiming to spot and rescue individuals that are in danger after air or shipping accidents on land or sea, within the limits of its operation region.

By assuming this task, Cyprus will be able to comply with all its international conventional obligations and to upgrade its state entity by safeguarding its sovereign rights, stemming from international law.
