[01] Tourism is following an upward trend

Cyprus tourism is following an upward trend in the last few years. The overall income from the tourism reached 1.277 billion Cyprus pounds in the year 2001 compared to 843 million in 1997, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr Nicos Rolandis stated yesterday.

Speaking at the annual seminar of the Hoteliers Association, Mr Rolandis said that the negative developments which followed the terrorist attacks against the United States did not affect the upward trend of tourism, since the income from tourism in 2001 showed an increase of 7%, compared with that of the year 2000.

Mr Rolandis pointed out that efforts are now focused on taking the necessary measures to support tourism in order to achieve even better results this year.

Concluding, he said that the aim of the Cyprus Government is the continuous revitalization, enrichment and upgrading of tourism and services offered, so that Cyprus can face the tough competition, which exists between tourist destinations.
