[01] House President stresses the need to find solutions to the Cyprus and Middle East problemsCyprus and Malta are the only Mediterranean countries participating in the enlargement process, thus giving the opportunity for European Union expansion to the South, the President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias has stated.Addressing the 3rd Conference of the Presidents of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliaments on Saturday in Athens, Mr Christofias expressed the hope that, with its accession to the EU, Cyprus would become a bridge of communication for economic, political and cultural cooperation between EU countries and Cyprus' neighbouring countries, due to its geographical position and its very good relations with its neighbouring countries. Cyprus's good relations with both Israel and the Arabic countries, could contribute, at a parliamentary as well as a governmental level, to the promotion of a political dialogue between the interested parties in the Middle East problem, in order to terminate a conflict that causes so much suffering to the people of the Eastern Mediterranean, he said. Mr Christofias expressed regret for the fact that the principles of international law and honesty are not implemented by Turkey, which continues, to this day, to occupy an important part of Cyprus' territory. Moreover, he stressed that the solution of the Cyprus and the Middle East problems on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions and the principles of international law, would eradicate two dangerous areas of conflict, which poison the climate and the relations between many states and peoples of the Mediterranean. During his stay in Athens, the House President was received by the Greek Prime Minister Mr Costas Simitis, and had separate meetings with the President of the Greek Parliament Mr Apostolos Kaklamanis, the Greek Foreign Minister Mr George Papandreou and party leaders.
