[01] Forthcoming visit by President of the Republic to New York

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Glafkos Clerides, received on 5 November 2001 at the Presidential Palace, the USA Ambassador to Cyprus, Mr Donald Bandler.

In his statements the USA Ambassador stated that during their meetings the two men discussed various issues related to President Clerides' forthcoming visit to New York.

Mr Bandler noted that his country supported Cyprus' accession process to the EU with the hope that it would act as a catalyst for the solution of the Cyprus problem. He added that the important factor at this stage would be the resumption of the talks for the solution of the problem.

[02] 7.2 million pounds to support the tourist industry on the island

Four million Cyprus pounds as well as 3.2 million for winter tourism will be added to promote the campaign to advertise Cyprus as a tourist destination, in other words overall 7.2 million pounds will be disposed in this campaign.

The afore-mentioned was decided on 5 November 2001 during the meeting of the Council of Ministers and was announced by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Mr Nicos Rolandis.

The Minister added that he would be going to Frankfurt where he would be meeting with travel agents to promote Cyprus as a safe tourist destination. Mr Rolandis stated that he believed that these measures would benefit the Cypriot tourist industry and would allow it to escape the crisis.
