[01] Letter by President Clerides conveyed to the Prime Minister of Marocco

Dr Vassos Lyssarides, who is on an official visit to Marocco and Tunisia as Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Glafkos Clerides, met the day before with the Prime Minister of Marocco, Abderrahman El-Youssoufi to whom he conveyed a letter by President Clerides. Dr Lyssarides briefed Mr El-Youssoufi for the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and for the continuous Turkish efforts for upgrading the status of the pseudo-regime in the occupied areas of the island, especially through the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. Dr Lyssarides requested Marocco's contribution to hinder these efforts and to support the adoption of resolutions adopted by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference which will be in line with the UN resolutions on Cyprus.

Mr El-Youssoufi referred to the moderate policy his country adopted and to its firm stance for resolving problems through talks and noted that his country's policy is based on principles and that Marocco would not alter its policy and would not be influenced by Turkey. His country, he added, supports the solution to the Cyprus problem based on a federal state through UN led talks and based on UN relevant resolutions.

Mr El-Youssoufi referred to the bilateral relations and expressed his wish for their reinforcement through the signing of bilateral agreements of cooperation. He noted the particular importance of cooperation in the field of shipping, an area in which, he stated, Cyprus has great potential.

[02] French Tourists are not advised to visit the occupied areas of Cyprus

French tourists visiting Cyprus are not advised to visit the occupied areas, because in case of emergency they will not be able to receive assistance and protection by the French state, since France does not recognise the self-proclaimed regime of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", French Deputy Minister of Tourism, Michelle Demessine, stated, inter alia, in the Official Journal of the French National Council on 14'5'2001, following a written question put forward by the member of parliament, Andre Aschieri.

[03] "United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East"

Cypriot Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Nations, Dr George Kasoulides, participated on 1 November 2001 to the discussion for the "United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugess in the Near East" (UNRWA) expressing his appreciation for the important work of this Programme and at the same time expressed his regret for the latest worrying developments in the Middle East. In his speech, Dr Kasoulides stated, inter alia, the following:

"Cyprus, a country that shares close and friendly ties with our Near East neighbors attaches great importance to the enhancement of the economic and social conditions of the Palestinian People and fervently hopes for lasting peace and security in the Middle East. The closeness in geography is made closer from our own experience of displacement and uprooting, following the Turkish invasion in 1974. In Cyprus the human suffering has to a great extent abated but we still crave for the return to our homes and properties and we are ever hopeful that these inalienable and fundamental rights as inscribed in UN resolutions and international law should be respected and implemented.

Cyprus is assisting in its own way. We have joined the appeals for additional and increased contributions in the aftermath of the recent crisis and at the same time we have created our own Scheme of Assistance, which includes programs of technical assistance and training of Palestinian officials and civil servants in Cyprus".
