It is time for Mr Denktash to stop making false allegations that the Greek Cypriots are solely responsible for the events of the 1960s. His policy since 1957 to impose partition, starting with the physical separation of the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, is well known and it would be enough for him to read the relevant United Nations reports of that period to remember that it was Mr Denktash himself and the TMT that enforced the segregation of the Turkish Cypriots in pockets strengthening his fellow countrymen's fear, by taking advantage of certain unfortunate acts of some Greek Cypriots. The use of this argument to condemn this land to a permanent partition bringing to the Turkish Cypriots self seclusion and financial misery, will not succeed.

Before speaking about "realities", which were imposed by the force of arms in violation of the international law, Mr. Denktash must take under consideration the other realities in the Arab world, such as the occupation of Arab territories which cannot be accepted no matter how many years pass.

Before speaking about secession and its legalization he must take under consideration the precedent this will create in most Muslim countries facing secessionist movements.

What is more, before speaking about Muslim solidarity let him explain first to the Arab world the alliance between Turkey and Israel and let him explain if the United Nations resolutions can be ignored, either in Cyprus or Palestine or Kuwait or elsewhere.

[02] Minister of Trade chaired the Committee of Ministers for Oil

In his statements after the conclusion of the meeting, Mr Rolandis stated that on 18 October 2001 he will be visiting Cairo following the invitaiton of the Egyptian Minister of Oil, Mr Sameh Fahmi. The Syrian Minister of Energy Dr Mohamad Maher Jamal will also be visiting Cairo. Mr Rolandis added that during the meeting in Cairo there will be discussions on the issue of providing Cyprus with natural gas and exchange views on the issue of setting the boundaries in the sea region between Egypt and Cyprus.

Mr Rolandis noted that the aim of his trip would be to conclude the agreement of buying natural gas by next summer, an act which will open the way for providing Cyprus with natural gas by 2006.

[03] Census of population

The census data are collected by authorized employees who visit the households in convenient hours and there is no need for anybody to change daily habits and schedules. Repeated calls will be made to absent households to ensure that a convenient time is arranged for the completion of the census questionnaire. It is repeated that the census will last until the end of November and therefore there is time for the enumeration of all resident population.

It is reminded that in every house all members of the household having their usual residence at the place should be reported, with persons absent temporarily also to be included (i.e. students abroad, sailors,working temporarily abroad, patients in clinics, etc.).

The census aims to enumerate both Cypriots and non-Cypriots who live or intend to live in Cyprus for more than a year. It is therefore intended to enumerate in addition to the foreigners permanently residing in Cyprus and all other non-Cypriots (students, workers, etc.) whose duration of stay in Cyprus exceeds or will exceed one year.

The Statistical Service assures everybody that all data and information collected during the census are treated as confidential; nobody has access to personal data which are used only for statistical purposes.
