[01] There's no reason for concern, says Government Spokesman
During the briefing to the press, on 8 October 2001, the Government
Spokesman, Mr Michalis Papapetrou made the following statement: "After the
beginning of the military operation against Afganistan, all necessary
measures have been taken in Cyprus following the government's decision.
These measures have been taken without exaggeration and they have been
applied in such a way as to avoid unnecessary anxiety for there is no
reason justifying any such sentiments. The government is addressing
everybody and suggests that people stay calm, maintain self-control and
continue with their regular occupation.
With regard to information concerning the presence of USA military
aircrafts at Larnaca airport, I deny any such information once and for all.
The afore-mentioned aircrafts belong to the Civil Aviation and they carry
merchandised goods, and their landing is of a common practise when similar
requests are being put forward. It needs to be clarified, though, that the
government has no intention of verifying or denying any similar information
because it is not appropriate to do so".
