Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 01-08-31Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Friday, 31 August 2001CONTENTS[01] Cyprus protests to the UN for illegal excavations in the Turkish occupied part of CyprusThe Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Alexandros Vikis, has forwarded two letters to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mrs Mary Robinson strongly protesting against illegal activities undertaken by Turkey in the area of the Republic under Turkish occupation since 1974.In his first letter, Ambassador Vikis protests against illegal excavations undertaken between 25th June and 29th July 2001 at Salamis by an Ankara University team, noting that the illegal excavations started in 1999 and violate all international conventions and recommendations on the Protection of Cultural Heritage. In a second letter, Ambassador Vikis brings to Ms Robinson's attention a decision on Cyprus by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which "reaffirms the importance of putting an end to the foreign occupation of Cyprus so that all human rights and freedoms will be enjoyed by all Cypriots irrespective of their ethnic origin as envisaged in the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, in particular the rights to freedom of movement and residence, and to own property throughout Cyprus". [02] President Bush submits to US Congress his bimonthly report on CyprusUS President Mr George Bush has submitted to Congress his latest report on the progress toward a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus question, which covers the period between June 1 - July 31, 2001.In his letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, President Bush states the following: "The United Nations continued in its efforts to resume the proximity talks on Cyprus that started in December 1999. During the reporting period, Special Cyprus Coordinator Thomas G. Weston and US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald K. Bandler continued to provide diplomatic support to this process. The United States remains committed to the United Nations effort to find a just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus problem". [03] 12th World Congress of Overseas Cypriots endsThe 12th World Congress of Overseas Cypriots ended yesterday with the adoption of resolutions in support of the efforts in reaching a just solution to the Cyprus problem.In their resolutions, the delegates called upon the governments of the countries they live in and the UN Secretary General to intensify their efforts in promoting the UN-led process in reaching a just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus problem based on the relevant Security Council resolutions, the 1977 and 1979 High Level Agreements, the principles of international law, and the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. They also expressed their support towards the government and the people of Cyprus, in their efforts to find a just solution to the Cyprus problem. The resolutions were addressed to Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, Greece's Prime Minister Costas Simitis, UN Secretary General Kofi Anan, US President George Bush, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, President of the European Commission Romano Prodi, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and to the Turkish Cypriot community.
