[01] Positive response to a UN possible invitation
The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Glafkos Clerides, had stated on
3 August 2001, that the government would respond positively in the case the
UN Secretary General would extend an invitation for the resumption of the
talks.
However, President Clerides had also clarified that the resumption of the
UN-led peace talks would depend on the outcome of a meeting between the UN
Secretary General, Kofi Annan and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash,
on 28 August in Salzburg, as had been stated earlier by the Spokesman of
the UN Secretary-General, Mr Fred Eckhard.
