[01] Cyprus closes EU harmonization chapter on Environment

The Chapter on Environment of Cyprus' EU accession negotiations closed on 27 July 2001, during the 13th Meeting of the Inter-Governmental Conference at deputy level, held in Brussels.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment expressed its satisfaction, and added that this was a difficult and complex chapter, which involved the co-operation of many different ministries, services and authorities.

[02] Australia supports UN efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem

The government of Australia strongly supports the UN Secretary General's efforts to encourage meaningful dialogue and find a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem, the Australian Federal Prime Minister, Mr John Howard said in his message conveyed during a memorial service in Sidney, for those killed during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

Australia's special envoy for Cyprus, Mr Jim Short is currently preparing a report identifying ways in which Australia might be able to assist further in resolving the Cyprus dispute, Mr Howard added.

On his part, the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to Australia, Mr Sotos Liasides condemned the continuing occupation and violation of Human Rights in Cyprus.

Mr Liasides confirmed the Government's efforts to achieve a viable solution to the Cyprus problem, in line with the relevant UN Resolutions.
