[01] Interior Minister says cultural issues are a priority for Cyprus government

Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou has said that cultural and educational issues are always a priority for the Cyprus government.

Addressing an informal meeting of Ministers for Cultural and Audiovisual Affairs in Sweden yesterday, Mr Christodoulou said it is a firm policy of the government to upgrade cultural issues and encourage creativity in the letters and the arts, as well as cultural exchanges between Cyprus and other countries.

He added that Cyprus has harmonised its legislation in the audiovisual field with the acquis communautaire particularly with Directive 36 of 1997 regarding "Television without Boundaries".

He expressed Cyprus' intention to participate the soonest in the next phase of the Media Plus programme, which has been implemented for EU member states since the beginning of the year.

He also expressed the government's support for efforts by the Swedish presidency of the European Union to introduce a dialogue among the EU candidate states and countries of the European Free Trade Association to tackle audiovisual issues of concern.
