[01] More Turkish Cypriots applying for Cyprus passports

The Minister of the Interior, Mr Christodoulos Christodoulou has confirmed reports on a private TV station that the number of Turkish Cypriots applying for Cyprus passports has increased over the past three months.

"While there has been a definite increase over the past three years, this has been considerably greater over the past three months", he said.

The Minister said this increase is either due to the unfortunate tendency of Turkish Cypriots to leave the occupied areas because of the increasing economic problems there or to their realisation of the benefits of having a Cypriot passport once the island joined the EU.

[02] Commerce Minister in US

Cyprus is a good trade partner for the US with bilateral commerce reaching some 400 million dollars, Cyprus' Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr Nicos Rolandis has said.

Speaking to reporters in Washington after separate meetings with US Trade Secretary Don Evans and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, Mr Rolandis, who is on a three-day visit there, said he discussed issues relating to the protection of copyrights as well as renewable sources of energy and natural gas and oil deposits in the Mediterranean. He also briefed them on Cyprus' accession course into the European Union and invited the two American ministers to visit Cyprus.

Mr Rolandis added that relations between Cyprus and the US are being given a new dimension through discussions with senators and members of the House of Representatives on general economic matters.

Before returning to Cyprus today, Mr Rolandis will visit Baltimore Washington International Airport for meetings with the Maryland governor and other officials on the effort to introduce direct flights between the US and Cyprus.
